Shiner Plans July Fourth Celebration at Blucher Park

A joint committee of W F W Post 6209 and American Legion Post 201 plans a large Fourth of July event at Blucher Park Shiner. A full day program includes dinners with pork sausage meals a night dance at Blucher Hall and a band concert. Community members are asked to donate eggs potatoes or pickles by June 26 and drop them at the Shiner Bakery or Tasler's lunch room to ensure purchases.

Fish and Game League appoints committees and funds

Directors of the Fish and Game League met June 14 at Welhausen Recreation grounds with sixteen members present and a steak fry. Committees were named for Membership, Grounds, and Road. secretary John Cook reported 211 members and $551 in cash. The by laws allow moved members to keep regular dues and a rain check policy for those drafted. A plan to build low dams and pools for fish habitat was approved with a first dam site chosen by Berckenhoff, Wolters, Welhausen, Welhausen, and Mueller. Other projects include ground improvement and willow eradication. members urged to keep the grounds clean.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 4 from the Eschenburg Funeral Parlor for Joe Rott pastor W L Hightower officiated with a mixed voice choir singing What A Friend We Have In Jesus and Rock Of Ages Burial was in Shiner City Cemetery casket attendants were H G Koether Anton Hodanek Elo Wolters E J Kempe Alfred Ripper and Bennie Fehrenkamp Rott born March 13 1887 in Czechoslovakia came to America at 18 landed in New York married Fannie Pechek in 1910 in New York they moved to Shiner in 1914 and lived there 34 years Survivors include his wife five children Willie Jerry Rott Shiner Laddie Rott Mrs Clinton Lillie Crowell Houston Mrs Edward Annie Zalman El Campo four grandchildren and one half sister in Czechoslovakia Two sons served in World War II Willie infantry in Germany Laddie Army Air Corps in European Theatre Sons in law served in the Pacific Zalman in Army Air Corps Guam Crowell Navy Philippines He died Thursday morning at 2 30 aged 61 years 2 months 27 days He once operated a garage later engaged in oil scouting and remained in that line until illness He was a quiet man who kept to his own affairs The family receives sympathy

Burglars Reported In Shiner Nighttime Home Invasion

Thomas Hughs recalls burglars entering his home Saturday night while the family slept. The thief took four one dollar bills and a silver dollar from his wallet, found on a stool, and left the billfold on the front porch. A raid on Stella Jo’s bedroom bag yielded no theft.

Gussie Mae Cammack and Otto G. Gloor united in marriage at United Dr. Martin Luther Church in a quiet ring ceremony at 8 pm. Rev. Edwin J. Oehlke officiated. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Garbade. The couple plans a brief honeymoon and will reside in the Longoria home apartment.

Gus J Strauss Elected President of St Edward's Alumni

State Senator Gus Strauss was chosen president of the St Edward's University Alumni Association in Austin on June 4 and 5. Bill Sullivan of Dallas was named vice president and Ferdinand Kinane of Austin treasurer. Rev James J O'Brien was elected chaplain as the alumni group forms on a national basis.

Funeral Rites Held for Msgr Joseph J Szymanski in Weimar

Final rites for the Rt Rev Msgr Joseph J Szymanski were held at St Michael s Church Weimar with Archbishop Lucey presiding. Over eighty priests attended the solemn high mass as the pastor of Weimar for forty two years and Golden Jubilee celebrant in 1947 lies in state before interment in Weimar Catholic Cemetery.

Miss Mildred Jean Welhausen of Yoakum crowned Queen Ceres XVII as part of the 18th Tom Tom Coronation at Yoakum High School Auditorium. Royal visitors from Shiner included Duchess Stella Hughs and Duke Alton Tieken, with other ties to Dreyer and Turk families. Little Miss Jeanette Allen Hirsch won in the Kiddies Parade.

Funeral Rites Held for 6 Year Old David Goetz

A sudden death shocked Yoakum family as David Henry Goetz aged 6 years 5 months 28 days died June 13 at Huth Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were conducted June 15 at Buffington Chapel with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. He is survived by his parents two sisters Nancy and Betty Jean a brother Martin and grandparents.

Pilat Haverda Rites Solemnized at St Joseph Moulton

Miss Dorothy Pilat and James Haverda were married in a double ring ceremony at St Joseph Catholic Church Moulton. Rev Joseph Kopp officiated Nuptial Mass with Clare and Bertha Oehl at the organ music. The bride wore slipper satin with seed pearls and a cathedral train. Bridesmaids and groomsmen wore white dotted Swiss and blue suits respectively. A reception followed at the bride’s parents home.

Rites Held For Mrs Joe Petras in Shiner Texas

Mrs Joe Petras nee Mary Wolf died at home June 14 after a two year illness. She was born in Czechoslovakia April 12 1883 and came to America at nine settling near Flatonia. Funeral from home to Sts Cyril and Methodius Church. Survivors include husband Frank, son Frank Petras, daughters Mary Kindler Ella Simper and Millie Migl, siblings and grandchildren. Her son Tech Sgt Adolph Petras died in France August 15 1944 and was re interred in Shiner Catholic Cemetery April 24 this year.
