Matus Leases Hallettsville Meat Market

Jerry L. Matus of Shiner has leased a Hallettsville meat market and began operation Monday June 14. He offers fresh meats smoked sausages and poultry with years of trade experience. The Matus family plans to move to Hallettsville when suitable housing is found. Also noted is a drought affecting ranchers in Beeville George West Three Rivers and Tilden with cattle for sale and water shortages.

Pretty wedding ties Malnovsky to Zapalac in Texas

Miss Marie Malnovsky and Willie Zapalac were married Tuesday June 22 at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church. The ceremony led by Rev J J Hanacek included a Nuptial Mass with witnesses Paul Pekar and Louis Krpec. The couple plan to live in Corpus Christi after a Galveston honeymoon. Out of town guests included Schulenburg Hallettsville and Yoakum residents.

Remains Of Overseas Veterans Due To Arrive In States

Relatives were notified Monday that the remains of Pvt. George Pustejovsky and Pfc. Edgar E. Goetz were en route home and would soon arrive in the states. The soldiers lost their lives on the battlefields of France and are now being returned for final burial in their homeland. Further information will be forthcoming.

Koether Nominated 9th District Delegate at Republican Convention

Hugh G. Koether of Shiner was elected as the 9th District delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. He led five aspirants across 15 counties with 24 of 31 votes, joining Texas 33 delegates. Koether departed for Houston to board the Houston Philadelphia Special train.

First National Bank Front Gets Modern Glass Facade

Laws and hammers were taken up Monday morning in front of the First National Bank and Welhausen Store to install a new glass front and doors. Plans for the store front are not complete but expected to finish soon. The front has been closed and a board walk set up to protect pedestrians.

Knights Of Columbus Initiation Held In Shiner

The Msgr. Netardus Council No. 3081 held its second initiation since installation nine months ago on June 20 in Shiner. The day began with 6:30 Mass and communion, then a park breakfast, barbecue lunch, and a public supper attended by about 350. Exemplification of the degrees occurred at Wied Hall with several clergy and council leaders present. 28 candidates from Shiner and surrounding towns received initiation.

Gulf Service Station Adds Grease Rack

An addition to the Gulf Service Station enlarged the building and includes a hydraulic lift. Bennie Simper and Frankie Migl operate the station and say the upgrade will provide better and more efficient service. The stucco expansion gives the place a modern look and invites customers to inspect the new facilities.

Shiner Public Schools Regain Accreditation Status

The accreditation issue for Shiner Public Schools is resolved and the district is back on the accredited list. The inquiry stemmed from correspondence by teachers at the colored school with the State Office of Education over extenuating circumstances, which should have involved Shiner school officials.

Edmund L. Roeder Passes State Board Examination

Edmund L. Roeder of Rosenberg has passed the state board exams and is now a licensed embalmer. A Lan​dig College graduate, he did a two year internship at Forrester Funeral Home in Rosenberg as funeral director. He plans to locate in Shiner and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Roeder of Shiner. He married Eileen Strauss of Hallsville. they have two sons.

Miculka Brothers Buy Post Cafe

Gene Daniel and Leon Miculka purchase the Post Cafe from Louis and Mrs Pustejovsky. They take charge July 1. Leon has worked there, the brothers plan to move to Shiner this week. They are sons of Charles and Mrs Miculka of Shiner.

Vacation Church School Closes Sunday Evening

Vacation Church School at the Methodist Church closes Sunday evening at 8 o clock. Mrs Wm Wendtland general superintendent and Mrs Peck Welhausen superintendent of children’s department direct the program with teachers including Mrs Frank Steiner beginners and Mrs Elton Zander primary.
