Citizens are urged to revive Old Glory display on Flag Day June 14 and merchants are asked to join. Also reports on Dominick the mouse ending a cancer study, Sixth Flags summer opening, and Dallas Methodist conference coverage.
Funeral services for Louis A. Pagel were held May 28 1966 at the Cotulla Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ben Welch and Rev. Bill Simpson officiating. Burial followed in Cotulla Cemetery. Pagel died May 27 in Kerrville Veterans Hospital at 69 after an extended illness. He was born July 21 1896 in Shiner and lived in Cotulla since 1926 working as a plumber and electrician until retirement in 1958. He is survived by his wife Jennie, two daughters Virginia Ann Pagel and Jean Wier, two sisters and two grandsons.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church Flatonia announces the annual parish picnic to be held Sunday June 12 at the Parish Hall and church grounds. A family style dinner features sausage stew fried chicken dressing and trimmings with day and night music by the Johnnie Holub Orchestra.
The final service of a four day Methodist conference at Southern Methodist University will appoint about 2000 ministers for the 1966 67 year. Governor John Connally spoke at the Tuesday night session as the eight Texas annual conferences meet for the first time combined. The event marks the 200th anniversary of Methodism in America and the 50th of SMU with joint sessions and commemorations.
The Farm Bureau announces its annual supper at 7 30 p m Tuesday June 14 at Legion Park. The meal is free for members who bring a covered dish. Refreshments will follow as in prior years.
Charlie Longorio was moved to the Trinity Lutheran Home on Thursday June 2 after two weeks in a Gonzales nursing home. He had been in a San Antonio hospital for several months.
Knights of Columbus announce a regular meeting at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday June 16 in the Parish Gym. Altar Society meets Tuesday June 14 at 2:30 p.m. in the Parish Gym. 1966 Shiner High graduates may pick up photos at the school 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FHA plans yearbook activities June 13-14. SPJST Lodge 45 Vlastenec hosts a Sunday meeting with a social and lunch. Eastern Star officers install Tuesday June 14 at 8:00 p.m. VFW and Auxiliary meet Thursday June 9 at 8:00 p.m. at the Post Home.
The Shiner Dance Club hosts a Western Dance at Wied Hall on Saturday night June 11 with The Mustangs providing music. Breakfast is served to members at 1.00 per person with no guests allowed.

The Shiner Public Schools high school library opens for the summer with books for all ages and most fields of interest available to residents of the Shiner Independent School District. A library aide is on duty from 9:00 to 3:00 daily to help locate, check out, and return books.
Postmaster Arthur Ward announced a new Hallettsville to Victoria star route service starting Monday May 30 at 3 20 p m passing Shiner. Shiner receives mail from La Grange Schulenburg and Hallettsville and forwards all Shiner mail to the Victoria sectional center. This shifts mail processing earlier enabling Victoria to begin handling letters and packages sooner and patrons are urged to mail early by 3 00 p m.
Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Yoakum observes its 75th anniversary with 10:30 a.m. anniversary worship led by Dr. Philip Wahlberg of Austin and an ordination at 3:00 p.m. for Al Hoerig, joined by ministers Rev. Del Dolton and others. A 11:30 a.m. beer barbecue and exhibits of 75 years' pictures follow in the Parish Hall.
A Requiem Mass was held for Mrs. Martha Hranitzky Ashley 81, of Winkler and Galveston. Born 1884 in Cat Spring Texas, she died May 28 1966 in Winkler after living in Shiner Yoakum and Galveston. Survived by two brothers and multiple nieces and nephews.
The 12th KJZT General Convention will meet June 12 to 14 in Granger Texas to decide the permanent site of the KJZT Union Main Office. Hallettsville is among towns hoping to be selected.
The parish of St Marys Catholic Church hosts its annual parish Picnic at St Marys Church on Farm to Market Road 340. Masses at 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. Corpus Christi celebration at 10:00 a.m. Dinner served at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Barbecue stew chicken and trimmings priced 1.25 for adults 0.50 for children. Auction at 3:00 p.m. William Gerlich Orchestra provides music.
The Alamo Area Tuberculosis Association mobile X ray unit will be in Shiner at Legion Park on Friday June 17 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Admission costs 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for teens 15 to 18, with excess fees not denying service.
Frances Zissa longtime Texas settler dies at 92 after stroke. Funeral services held in Shiner with Requiem Mass. Survived by five sons, four daughters, 29 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren. SPJST Lodge member since 1897. last surviving Holub siblings. Burial June 4 after delayed service to await relatives.
Parents of children entering school for the first time in September are urged to enroll in Shiner Independent School Districts Pre School Program. The four week summer session runs June 20 to July 15 from 8 am to 1 pm with meals, bus pickup, and staff led by Melvin E. White.
A Social Security representative from Victoria Texas will be at Shiner City Hall at 9 AM on Monday June 13 to assist with filings. Citizens may file claims or seek information during the outreach event.
In Lavaca County the Democratic runoff drew 972 total ballots with 959 in person and 13 absentee. Crawford Martin led attorney general race by a two to one margin, and Conde Anderson edged Kirkpatrick for the Texas Board of Education post, helped by a strong Galveston County showing. Local results from Halletts ville, Yoakum, Shiner, Moulton, and Moravia listed by box totals.
