Anita Discher R N La Grange nurse dies at 64 in Shiner

Anita Discher R N born November 16 1901 near Shiner Texas daughter of Paul and Lillian Discher. She earned her RN in 1930 and worked in La Grange Colorado and Shiner serving as a nursing professional until 1965. She died May 21 1966 at Wagner Memorial Hospital and is buried in the family plot.

He was born June 16 1907 in Nikel Gonzales County and married Wilma Zander in 1930.

Mrs Anna Vornsand Meyer 88 died May 24 1966 in Trinity Lutheran Home Fayette/Shiner area. Born April 21 1878 in Oldenburg Germany she came to America at age seven with parents Willie and Johanna Vornsand. She married Fritz Meyer January 6 1898 and farmed most of her life. Funeral at MEYER FUNERAL.

Victor Krejci Named Supt. At LaVernia

Victor Krejci will become Superintendent of Schools in LaVernia on July 1 1966. He holds a BA from the University of Texas an MA from SWTSC and graduate work at Howard Payne College on a National Science Foundation grant. He has eighteen years in education as coach and teacher and recently taught mathematics and driver education in Cuero Public Schools. The Krejcis formerly lived in Shiner.

Vacation Church School Opens at Luther Church

Vacation Church School begins Monday morning June 6 at United Dr Martin Luther Church for children from nursery to Grade 6 studying Jesus and the Church. Grade 7 students entering 8th grade enroll in Catechetical Class I with compulsory attendance. Class II continues under Mrs Brian Helweg.

John P. Kurtz 81 died May 22 1966 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Shiner. Requiem Mass held May 24 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary two children eight grandchildren and three sisters along with four brothers.

Storm injures Shiner area as heavy rains and winds hit Friday

A Friday storm lashed Shiner and surrounding areas with about two inches of rain and gusts near 70 mph. Large tree limbs fell, and TVs, antennas, and trees were knocked down while water covered streets. Hail up to golf ball size struck Yoakum and power was out there for about 40 minutes.

Shiner School Adds Elementary Wing With New Gym

Following a November bond win the Shiner school system awarded Odell Lueckemyer of Brenham a $112,300 contract for an elementary wing including classrooms a home making department and an administrative office. Surveying began April 4 with completion planned in 120 working days for occupancy by the next term.

Adolph Maeker aged 72 10 months and 21 days of Route 4 Victoria died May 26 1966 after a long illness. Funeral services were held May 28 at McCabe Carruth Chapel with Rev James Carson officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers included nephews Willie C Hoerig Herman Noack Raymond Maeker Edgar Maeker Roy Gerloff and Robin Boltz. Maeker born July 5 1893 near Moulton lived in Dreyer community, married Martha Gerloff in 1919, farmed at Shiner, later worked at Atzenhoffer Chevrolet and then ran Maeker's Bar. He was a World War II veteran.
