Unknown Farmer Deserves Recognition
A long-ago farmer first used Chilean nitrate of soda as a side-dressing for cotton and corn, a practice that today has millions following. Reports cite timing for cotton just before first cultivation and for corn 35 to 40 days after planting, with specific nitrogen applications yielding higher outputs. Experiments show mix and side-dressing approaches, tracing origin to Chilean nitrate of soda once known as Chile saltpeter and prized for over fifty years as a premier nitrogen fertilizer by farmers and researchers alike.
