Older People Eligible For Medicare Sign Up Extension

Notices urge Americans who turned 65 before early 1965 to enroll by May 31 1966 after a deadline extension. Shiner will close Monday May 30 for Memorial Day with business houses shut and a note for shoppers to buy groceries Saturday. The Shiner Post Office will close and rural route deliveries halt. The First National Bank will open 9 to 12 noon on that day.

The Shiner American Legion Auxiliary urges all Americans to wear a red memorial poppy on Poppy Day Saturday May 28. Proceeds aid disabled veterans in hospitals and workshops who make the flowers, honoring those who died and helping living veterans.

Alfons Kubicek a 77 year old Moulton resident died at his home on Sunday May 15 1966. Funeral services were held May 17 at Smith Funeral Home and St Josephs Catholic Church with a Requiem Mass. Boy Scouts Honored In Yoakum Ceremonies May 15

More than 400 Scouts adults and family members attended Catholic Scout awards in Yoakum over May 14 15. Explorer Troop 228 staged a campout with an evening campfire program featuring Indian dances and skits by visiting troops. Auxiliary Bishop Steven A. Leven presented the Ad Altare Dei awards to about 80 outstanding Scouts from Archdiocese parishes during a Sunday Mass at St. Benedict's Church with Rev. Robert E. Schmidt officiating.

Shiner ISD Kicks Off Four Week Pre School Program

The Shiner Independent School District will offer a four week pre school program under ESEA Title I for eligible students age six by September 1 1966. The program runs June 20 to July 15 from 8 30 a m to 1 00 p m with daily lunch and free school supplies and a physical exam if needed. Melvin E White directs a staff of four teachers and four aides. A June 1 parents meeting at 8 00 p m will register students and outline daily activities.

Monday Rites For A J Kallus 98 in Wied Community

A J Kallus of the Wied community died at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner on May 21 1966 aged 98 years 2 months 1 day. He was born March 20 1868 in Frenstat p Radhostem Czechoslovakia and moved to Texas in 1880. He married Teresa Migl November 10 1890 and lived in Wied 70 years. He served as KJT president 22 years and was an honorary president. Funeral services May 23 at Kabena Funeral Home Hallettsville and 9 30 at St Marys Catholic Church. Burial in Wied Cemetery. He leaves seven daughters two sons 61 grandchildren and 120 great grandchildren.

Shiner ISD Board Hears TEA Visit and Curriculum Plans

The Shiner Independent School District Board met in regular session on May 11. They discussed a second high school curriculum sequence and received a favorable TEA report from Cotton Ashton on the Title I remedial program. Resignations of Dixie Marr and Sharon Struve were accepted and invoices were approved.

Public School Library Opens for Summer in Shiner ISD

The Shiner Independent School District opens its public school library this summer from 9 to 3, Monday through Friday, starting June 1. A library aide will issue and receive books in June through August with a two week loan limit and fines of 10 cents first day and 5 cents per day after.
