State Representative and Mrs. Terry Newman of Cuero brought Stonewall peaches to the Gazette on Monday. Congratulations to Mrs. John Jurek on her 85th birthday with a surprise party and family gathering in Shiner.
Wolters Memorial Museum seeks clothbound hardback books for a new public library inside the museum building. Donors will be credited with their names inside donated books. Deliveries accepted Sunday July 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 306 South Ave I Shiner. staff will record donations. Tour the museum during the visit and see recent additions since 1965.
On Friday July 18 the Clippers meet Refugio at Green Dickson Municipal Park at 8 15 p m Local time In contrast on Sunday July 20 the Clippers face the Yoakum Indians in Yoakum at 3 00 p m The article lists venue times for both games and identifies opponents Refugio and Yoakum Indians.
The 1969 National Jamboree chaired by Dwight J. Thomson will take place at Farragut Park Idaho. 20 000 tents and 20 camps will host Scouts from four regions with long distance phones a field hospital and four trading posts.
Bennett G Treptow 59 of Hallettsville, assistant manager at Gandlers Department Store, died of a heart attack July 8 1969 while waiting for a prescription at Kahanek and Renger Drug Store. Funeral July 10 at Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Hilda and three daughters, six grandchildren, and three brothers and two sisters.
Kennett A Pfeil, recently released from the U S Air Force, earned the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and Vietnam era decorations including the Vietnam Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He served 15 months in Southeast Asia on B 52 crews, flying 130 combat missions, and toured Guam Okinawa Thailand and Hong Kong. He is now a Braniff Airlines second officer in Dallas on the Boeing 727.
A State Health Department citation for work proficiency was awarded to Alois Herman a Shi ner water system plant operations specialist. The certificate of competency, signed by the State Health Commissioner and Texas Water Utilities Association authorities, recognizes Herman’s skill and knowledge in modern plant management and requires extensive experience schooling and an exam.
The Shiner Dance Club hosts a Saturday night summer dance on July 19 at Legion Park. Music will be provided by Knights of Dixie as guests attend the event.
Funeral services for John E Valenta were held July 10 at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rev J Gordon Talk officiating. Burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Surviving are wife Lillie Valenta daughter Caroline Gatewood seven grandchildren and three sisters.
Edgar Proschko, manager of Spencer-Sauer Lumber Co. in Yoakum, is in Galveston undergoing training for use of the artificial kidney machine. His wife accompanies him in Galveston. Their address is Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Proschko c/o Vickie Napoli Apts, 810 Post Office Street, Galveston, Texas 77550.
A cotton meeting will be held at the VFW Hall in Shiner at 2 00 p m Monday July 21 1969. Speakers Fred Elliott and Beverly Reeves of Texas A&M University will discuss defoliants and cotton harvesting problems. All cotton farmers in Lavaca DeWitt and Gonzales Counties and their wives are invited.
Winn's Stores Incorporated of San Antonio announces the purchase of the Elkins Store in Shiner and takes over management on July 9. The 105 store Texas chain will operate Shiner with Glenn Leist at the helm, maintaining current personnel and policies as it expands in Weimar Schulenburg Bas trop Giddings Elgin and Halletsville deals.
Melvin R. Rother, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rother of Hallettsville, is an aerospace engineer at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. The center controls all manned flights and will oversee Apollo 11 from launch to recovery. Rother, a Hallettsville High School graduate with a mathematics degree from Sam Houston State College, is pursuing further work at the University of Houston. His wife Gail is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Warthan of Sheridan.
Frank Delano Heiman known as Lanny Heiman of Danbury died suddenly at home on Saturday June 28 1969 at age 25. Bible Vigil Services were held June 29 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Requiem Mass June 30. Burial followed at Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Heiman was a Brazoria County sheriff’s dispatcher and member of law enforcement groups. Pallbearers included Brazoria deputies in full dress and sheriff’s department members in uniform. Surviving are his parents a sister and paternal grandparents. Attendees included Constable Daniel Koranek and family and others from Shiner New Braunfels Moulton and Shiner communities.
Visiting periods are 7 00 to 730 1000 to 1100 2000 to 4000 and 1900 to 2030. Current patients include Mrs Rudolf Jurica Mrs Louise B Osborn Mrs Herman Schreiber Mrs Albina Vrazel and others. Dismissals this week include Albert Bargmann Mrs Elsa Blohm and several others.
Wayne Koenning and Carl Dolezal of the Shiner FFA chapter will attend the FFA state convention in Fort Worth July 16 18. The three day meeting of over nine hundred chapters includes degrees scholarships and awards. Guest speakers include Lt Governor Ben Barnes Marilyn Van De Buren Jeff Hanlon and Lowell Catlett. Delegates will elect a state president and a sweetheart and select a talent team. More than 5000 FFA members advisors and guests are expected at the 41st annual convention. Ray Seale will accompany the FFA members.
Mr and Mrs Don Zander of Austin celebrate the birth of daughter Sherry Lynn at St David s Hospital weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces. Grandparents Ed gar P Kram Elton Zander and great grandparents from Shiner noted. Victor Pustka and Retavious Mathis also announce newborns in Shiner with birth weights 7 pounds 1 ounce and 6 pounds 9 ounces.
The Swiss Alp church celebrates its 100th anniversary with a Sunday festival on July 20 starting at 9 a.m. including a memorial service for the cemetery, a noon meal, entertainment, a country auction at 2:30, a country store, cake walk, and refreshments. Reverend Arlyn Hausmann hosts, with retired Reverend Fred Kern as guest preacher.
The Gonzales Butane Company plans to relocate its downtown office from Shiner to the Joe Panus residence.
