Vets and Survivors Urged to File Social Security Claims
Veterans and survivors must file promptly for retroactive benefits under the veterans amendment to the Social Security Act. The deadline is midnight February 10 as stated by Jess Carter of the San Antonio Social Security office. The rule covers cases where the veteran died before August 10 1946 and allows backdated checks to the month of death if filed by the deadline. Payments are retroactive for three months on February 10 filings. Survivors may qualify if the veteran died within three years after discharge, served at least 90 days since September 16 1940, was honorably discharged, and has no VA payment entitlement. National Service Life Insurance payments do not count. No social security card or taxes payment is required.
