The VFW Post 6209 faces the Shiner Rotary Club in a championship basketball game at the Gym on Wednesday February 12 at 7 30 p m. Proceeds aid the VFW National Home with a large crowd expected for this charity event.
The High School P T A will celebrate Founder's Day at the regular meeting Thursday February 13 at 4 p.m. A special number by the Sophomore Class directed by Max Seiden berger and a brief talk on developing better citizens by Mrs Ella E Lane will be presented.
One of Moulton’s best known settlers Joseph Kubenka Sr. died Sunday after a long illness at his home. He came to this country in youth and settled in the community, leaving a wife and several children including Joe Jr. and several daughters. Funeral services were held Tuesday Feb 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton with interment in the Catholic Cemetery.
The regular Sunday night service at 7 15 o clock will focus on the third lesson of the Stewardship study course conducted by the Pastor.
A PMA summary predicts insecticide and fungicide supplies in 1947 will vary. Arsenicals remain scarce with lead arsenate tight but calcium arsenate modestly available. DDT becomes more available though not plentiful and may replace some scarce arsenicals. Nicotine shortages persist, rotenone improves over 1946, and copper sulphate and sulfur are expected to be adequately supplied.
Gus Haslbeck mourns the death of his father Josef Haslbeck in Rosenheim Germany on December 10 1946 at age 73. Survivors include his wife Monica Spoetzl two sisters Catherine and Johanna in Germany and two sons August and Josef all of Shiner Texas.
N R Tasler has purchased the lunch counter formerly owned by Frank Albert in the rear of the L L Matus place of business. He will serve short orders hamburgers chili stew and steaks every day including Sunday. He solicits a portion of the patronage of the public.
Paul Griffith national commander of the American Legion will visit Gonzales Post on March 26 with State Commander Bertam E. Gresecke of Austin and a party of Legion officials. A noon luncheon is planned. This marks Gonzales as one of the few small towns to host a national commander visit due to its relatively large membership.
The Conroe high school 60 piece band led by W W Wendtland will join 64 high school musical groups at the Victoria festival on February 15. Pat Weaver Mildred Scott and Robert Buchanan earned state all state recognition. The all state ensemble performs at the Texas Music Educators convention in Waco February 6 7 and 8.
Mrs. Fritz Koch aged 67 died Jan 29 at 7 p m in a local hospital Hallettsville Her funeral from Kabena Funeral Home Hallettsville at 2 p m then to the Lutheran Church for 2 30 p m services Rev A D Klages officiated She was born in Hallettsville and married Fritz Koch in 1908 who died in 1933 Survived by one sister and four brothers Henry Koch and Henry Laas Otto Victor and Robert all of Hallettsville Preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
The Right Rev F X Wolf pastor of St Marys Fredericksburg was invested as monsignor in a 1030 a m ceremony at St Marys Church with Archbishop Lucey presiding. A noon banquet followed at St Marys School basement Feb 5, and a public reception that evening at St Josephs Hall.
Burial services under the Lutheran Church were held in Skidmore for Mrs Mary Friedrichs 75 widow of Adolph Friedrichs. She died Friday in San Antonio where she had lived since 1918. Born January 17 1872 in Lavaca County she was the daughter of Carl and Charlotte Schulze. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Henry Karsch Sabinal and Mrs E R Ballard D Hannis a son Capt Victor Friedrichs in Fort Leavenworth Kansas two grandchildren three sisters Mrs Dora Willms Mrs Lottie Macheg Goliad Mrs Ida Boldt San Antonio and one brother Louis Schulze Goliad.
Mrs. O. H. Schmidt formerly Stella Morgenroth writes from Kyoto where Major Schmidt serves. She describes a recital by Madam Michiko Hara and regular officer lectures, plus a Japanese tea ceremony with five girls in elaborate kimonos. She mentions arriving in Yokohama Jan. 4 aboard the hospital ship Hope after a 16 day voyage and praises the countryside and comforts.
Mrs Gus Wacker's daughter Dorothy of Corpus Christi and Mrs Felix Marek of Yoakum spent the weekend at the bed side of Mrs Tom Turek Jr a patient in the local hospital. Miss Joanna Gershon of Tucson and Miss Virginia Monroe of Austin spent the weekend with Miss Mary Lee Fietsam. Rev Edwin Oehlke and E A Zappe attended the Texas Sy nodical Convention U S C A at Harlingen this week.
Following the F. H. A. Queen's Coronation the Queen Ball is set for February fourteenth in the Shiner school Gymnasium. Invited are visiting F. H. A. girls their escorts and sponsors all local F. H. A. girls and sor. Public may attend the Coronation with tickets at 10 cents each.
Representative J. J. Mansfield of Columbus Texas was tapped by Chairman George Dondero to serve as ranking minority member of the new public works committee and as ranking Democratic member of its subcommittee. He will select Democratic members for the four subcommittees being created. Mansfield, long a watersway advocate, previously chaired the rivers and harbors committee from 1931 until Republicans reorganized the House this month.
The Junior Class of Shiner High School plans a Country Store sale at the Palace Theatre on Saturday February 8 from 2 to 5 PM. Proceeds support class activities and student projects.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society will meet Sunday February 9 after the 8 o clock Mass. Members are advised to attend and participate in parish activities and planning.
Shiner Chapter No. 272 O E S will receive their Deputy Grand Matron Tuesday night Feb 11 at 7 pm. It is hoped a large attendance will greet Mrs. Kempe on this occasion.
The local Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight at 7 30. Soil conservation staff are expected to attend and a large attendance is urged.
Report from Austin confirms rabies in the cat that severely bit Wm. C. Roth. Roth began vaccination promptly with no expected ill effects. As a precaution, residents are advised to keep pets under close observation.

Jerry Kurtz of Shiner Route 1 brought to this office Tuesday a Signal Corps Weather signal that fell from a parachute and balloon Monday at 11 a.m. near his field work site. The small device was well built with many intricate parts and a red silk parachute.
Nearly two million Cub Scouts Boy Scouts and Senior Scouts celebrate the 37th Boy Scout Week from Feb 7 to 13. The World Friendship Fund has contributed 110464.36 to aid overseas Scouting. In the Shirts Off Our Backs project over 400 cases about twenty tons of uniforms were donated to Scouts in 13 nations.
Mrs. Henry Lee received letters from St Die des Vosges France thanking her for Legion Auxiliary packages translated by Miss Mabel Merrem. Children seek pen pals and share city history including German destruction and postwar life.
The pledge of marriage vows united Miss Elizabeth Agnes Patek of Shiner and Benedict Kocian of Hallettsville on Tuesday morning at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church. The ceremony featured Nuptial High Mass, a large bridal party, and an elaborate reception and dance at Blucher Park.
