High School Play Safety First Delights Local Audiences

A drizzly start gave way to sleet and snow as Saturday’s crowd enjoyed the High School comedy Safety First at the City auditorium. Wilbert Kaspar, Alfred Bohman, Saunders Richter, Bennie Zimmerman, Anton Baros, Willie Hazel Monroe, Mae Rogge, Mary Koncaba, Ella Stratman, Annie Slater and the Eula Schultz led a strong cast under Mrs. Eula Schultz and Miss Lucile Schultz. The school orchestra, led by Mrs Thulemeyer, featured Elizabeth Pfenninger, Wilma Hillie and others. a cheri et solo by Olin Mittanek and a saxophone duet by Maxie Wolters and Herbert Nollkamper impressed audiences. Gross receipts totaled 51 dollars.

Fire department handles two calls including convent blaze

Saturday morning firefighters answered a call at St Ludmila's Convent for a short in an electric light line with no damage. Early Tuesday they responded to another blaze in an adjoining Convent block with no material damage. A smoke house at the Yurek home was destroyed but the house was saved. Mrs Yurek blamed mice and matches for the fire.

Mrs Leon Maeker Moves Home to Parents After Recovery

Mrs Leon Maeker has sufficiently recovered to leave the local hospital and return to the home of her parents Mr and Mrs A J Berckenhoff.

Plans for a Modern School Building in Shiner

The community enters the new year hopeful as plans mature for a modern school building. The Board of Education, with an architect visiting Shiner last Friday, has revised the original plans and will announce erection details once changes are completed.

Pay Your Taxes Before Jan 31 Election Year Notice

A public notice urges payment of city and school taxes by January 31 to avoid a ten percent penalty. It warns only a few days remain and reminds residents to pay their poll tax in this election year. Shiner Fair Interest Grows for June Event

Interest in the Shiner Fair to be held in the latter part of June is rising daily. Attend the Commercial Club meeting on February 2 to decide on beginning work on the Fair proposition. The 1923 Fair Association, which ran the 1923 fair, may be asked to manage the 1928 fair. T. J. Ponton, Sect.

Gift of Books Enriches Local Public Library Collection

A box from Waco containing 19 volumes arrives from Frank Macha and wife, adding to the Frank Macha collection now at 54 volumes. Mrs. Thomas Hughs of the Twentieth Century Club helps catalog the donation. Local gifts include The Clansman and Jungle Tales of Tarzan from Mayor Runk and 19th Century Year by Year by Mrs. Isolda Macha.
