New Officials for Kolar-Stanek Post No 201

The American Legion Department of Texas met at City Hall on Wednesday night January 9 1924 and elected officers for 1924. Robert J Bednar commanded the post Chas Cho vanetz adjutant William Dziewas finance Emil Tomasco first vice Frank Janda second vice Meyer publicity J J Schultz master at arms William Reichardt Jr chaplain and executive committee Hugo Pohler Henry Lee Frank Roeder. Dues are 3.00 a year covering state national and local. All ex service men are urged to join and help the community.

Bombers Fall To Moulton Girls In Big Clash

The Bombers suffered a girls basketball defeat as Moulton girls posted a 12 to 9 score. Despite strong passing and speed from Moulton, our girls showed effort in their first season game. The crowd awaits next Friday when Bomber teams host Moulton again at Bleacher Park gym.

X XX Century Club Luncheon and Books Discussion

On January 17 Mrs. Hugh Koether hosted the X XX Century Club with Mrs. Alfred Schramm as president. Twenty two members attended as they discussed ordering new books for the club library and set names to submit next meeting. Lessons on Early Medicine led by Mrs. A L Fuller with Mrs. Peck Welhausen covered the superstition of medicine and primitive witch doctors. The group examined the scientific method and psychology of patent medicine and debated establishing scientific medicine by law. The next meeting will be at Mrs. Edgar C Wolters on February 7.

Smallpox Outbreak Reported in Columbus Schools

Reports say 50 to 600 smallpox cases appeared in Columbus over weeks. The Columbus School District closed briefly for vaccination and quarantine at homes with cases, then reopened. The disease affects whites and Negroes. all schoolchildren were vaccinated before reopening. One case reported at Glidden and district schools, with children vaccinated there as well.

Death of Mrs. Josephine Zappe

Mrs. Josephine Zappe died Tuesday afternoon January 15 near Hallettsville at age 76. The body was brought to Shiner for burial in Catholic Cemetery Thursday at 4:00 p m beside her husband who died 16 years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Father L P Netardus.

Louis Bannert Burned at Sto ner Brewery

Louis Bannert suffered horrific burns while painting a beer tank at Sto ner Brewery. An adjacent worker with a lighted candle sparked flames that enveloped Bannert as he dove toward the opening, leaving three fourths of his body burned and in critical condition. doctors noted he protected his eyes and wore a cap to shield his scalp as he was rushed to hospital.

Funeral Follows Death of Prominent Local Plantations Owner

Mrs William Green was called to Iago for the illness of her brother in law Tyre Taylor who died daily. Funeral held in Wharton Saturday afternoon. Survived by wife a daughter Mrs Fadia Palmira and grandson Brooks Gary who married Mildred Fry. Taylor a leading citizen and large plantation owner. The Gazette extends sympathy.
