Fire destroys Pekar home near Shiner in January blaze
Paul Pekar Sr family suffered a total loss when their wood frame house burned January 17 1976 near the G W E C sub station about 112 miles west of Shiner. Mrs Pekar and two grandsons were at home as wind fueled the fire. The Shiner Fire Department fought the inferno but could not save the structure. Officials suspect an upstairs electrical short caused the blaze.

St Paul Students Take Part In Right To Life Walkathon
About fifty St Paul High School students will participate in a six mile Right To Life Walkathon on January 22 1976 marking the third anniversary of the Supreme Court abortion decision. Sponsors will pay per mile and a mid route refreshment stop is planned at the Dennis Mraz residence with sodas cookies provided. The march starts at St Paul High School goes to the downtown highway intersection turns onto Yoakum highway returns to St Paul and carries red roses from the Hallettsville Right To Life Committee symbolizing life.

Fire damages Elks Lodge in Gonzales on Highway 90
A costly blaze struck the Elks Lodge on Highway 90 A Bypass in Gonzales on Tuesday January 20 at 1 30 am. The old portion suffered the greatest damage while the newer wing had mainly smoke and water damage. Estimated damages reach about 40000 dollars.

A grass fire at Priest Dairy on the Moulton highway occurred Monday January 12 at 3 30 pm. It is believed to have begun from an electric fence wire. Another pasture fire was reported at the Arthur Ward farm on Thursday January 15. A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Paul Pekar home on Saturday January 17.
