Rotary Meeting Opens Year With Student Guests

The first Rotary meeting of the year was held at Casa Fiesta on January 7 with George Minear presiding and Henry Fietsam as secretary. Guests included two senior high students Cindy Davis and Chris Stluka, introduced by George Watzlavick, plus Steve Kubicek, Glenn Leist, and Ewald Erdelt who spoke on the Voice of Democracy program. Carla Beth Kubicek, reading her district-winning essay, stressed preserving heritage for a stronger union as the group praised American heritage and the future. The meeting ended after the closing song.

Bicycle Registration Saturday January 17 at Shiner City Hall

Citizens in Shiner and surrounding area are invited to bring bicycles to the old fire station next to the City Secretary's Office on Saturday January 17 1976 from 1 00 to 4 00 pm. Registration is free and bicycles will receive a permanent tag number recorded by the Shiner Police Department. Chief Rodney W Swisher and officers will assist and emphasize theft identification.

The Shiner Bicentennial Committee met January 6 at the New Fire Station to review progress and outline upcoming plans. They praised Hermann Sons and the Historical Contest, noted Homecoming tributes, and publicized the Freedom Train and Yankee Doodle production. A February film run and a February 20 Singing Cadets concert in Shiner were announced.

Shiner Bicentennial Calendar of Events

Bicentennial Attractions To Appear In South Texas

Two major events for the area include the touring Yankee Doodle musical production and the Freedom Train. The steam powered Freedom Train tour arrives in San Antonio at Lone Star Brewery on February 11, 1976 from 6 to 10 p.m., showcasing Americana and two centuries of history for families.

Shiner Chamber of Commerce met Jan 8 1976 at Casa Fiesta with Dennis Mraz presiding and Bill Goetz in charge of records. Members voted to pay 1976 dues to the South Texas Chamber and Texas Tourist Council and discussed Bicentennial events including a music festival sponsored by the local chamber. The next meeting is Feb 5 at Casa Fiesta.

Grass Fire Near Shiner Sparks From Cutting Torch

A large grass fire was reported about 2 30 p.m. Monday January 12 about four miles south of Shiner on the old demonstration farm. The Shiner country truck responded to the pasture fire believed started by sparks from a cutting torch used by workers dismantling an old car.
