Oyster Supper Held By Local Fire Department

The local Fire Department held its annual oyster and chicken supper Saturday night at the old City Hall. About 50 guests attended including Fire Department members, honorary members, Park Verein officers, City Council members and the local telephone force. President Ed Herder gave a fine year in review and all enjoyed a pleasant evening.

Squaws Defeated by Seguin in Seguin Basketball Game

The Commancho Squaws traveled to Seguin last Saturday to play Texas Lutheran College. At halftime Seguin trailed 17 to 6, and by the three-quarter mark Shiner led 23 to 11. In the final period Seguin fought back but Shiner held on for a 26 to 21 victory.

Charlottenburg Dramatic Play A Success

Last Sunday night the dramatic club presented Eyes of Love to a 35.90 crowd. Every character in the cast rendered a splendid performance and did credit to the club and themselves. The beautiful story held the audience’s attention. The soda water stand netted 3.60. The expenses were 6.60, leaving a net total of 32.90.

Ideal Home in Shiner by Hajek Couple Completes

A new ideal home for Mr and Mrs Emil Hajek is completed in southeastern Shiner. Built of Teas granite from Marble Falls with a Mini Manville asbestos roof the residence features a sunlit foyer near an iron grill front porch. Inside include a salmon and ivory fireplate in the living room and dining room with pastel wall finishes, cedar lined closets, enamel woodwork, and French doors. The layout includes a recreation room with scenic walls a kitchen and breakfast nook with green ivory tones and linoleum a hallway with floral walls a large basement and a drive in garage. Building materials came from Garbade and Temple Lumber Co with E Sonntag as contractor.

The Business Men's Club gathered January 13 1938 at the Palace Cafe with 15 members and a turkey supper. President A A Schramm presided, W C Schmidt served as secretary, December minutes approved, and a 4.00 payment to Shiner Chamber of Commerce for Community Christmas Tree expenses approved. Reports on Vera Hauschild and highway beautification were given, and officials from Highway Construction expected to locate in Shiner aiding early Highway 200 work weather permitting. Adjournment followed.

Albin Hummel Dies After Four Weeks Ill. Rites Held

Albin Hummel died Saturday morning January 15 at 8 25 at the family home in Dilworth after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the family residence and at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church with Rev E Bily and Rev Wichterich. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers included R A Walshak and D R Ogston among others. Born in Czechoslovakia at age 75 years 1 month and 12 days he came to the United States about 50 years ago with his brother Leopold who died about 42 years ago. Surviving are his wife Martha Spiekermann a daughter Mrs G A Schmidt and a daughter Mrs Joe Maddox plus nine grandchildren and one great grandchild and a sister Mrs H Stahl. He lived in the Dilworth community, worked 24 years at Wolters Bros. and 10 years at R A Walshak. A man of sterling character he was devoted to family and church and will be greatly missed. The Sons of Herman charter member attended in a body.

Death of Baby Jerome Novak in Houston

Infant son of Mr and Mrs Joe Novak of Houston died Wednesday. Funeral services were held at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor and interment followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery with Father Bily officiating. Sympathy extended to the bereaved parents.

Henry Garbade Funeral Held in Galveston

Henry Garbade 89 pioneer Galveston merchant died after a month of illness. Funeral services were held at 4 p m Monday at the First Lutheran Church with Rev Victor Albert officiating. Burial followed in New City cemetery. Garbade, active in Galveston commerce 53 years, retired in 1920, would have turned 90 next Sunday.
