Subscribers Urged To Send In All Address Changes

The Shiner Gazette asks subscribers to notify changes of address before moving. New post office rules raise notification fees from five to ten cents effective January 10. If the post office sends the address change notice, the fee also rises from five to ten cents. Changing an existing subscription costs about 25 cents, now 30 cents, due to stencil cutting and mailing list updates. Needing accurate records, publications urge advance notifications.

Rites in El Campo for Frank Riha

Frank Riha died suddenly in Bay City on Sunday January 7 1962 at 3 10 p m at age 55 years one month and one day He lived on Route 2 in El Campo and his family had gone to Bay City to help after a reception for his son Bennie and Bennie’s bride The funeral was held January 9 at 3 00 p m in Triska Chapel El Campo with Rev Father Stryk officiating Burial followed in Garden of Memories Rosary was said Monday night He was born December 6 1906 in Shiner to Frank and Mary Riha He married Mary Mucka in November 193? years ago and lived in Midway Shiner Louise and other Texas communities He is survived by his wife two sons Edward and Benjamin five sisters and several grandchildren He was preceded in death by siblings and by his infant brother Laddie

Rites Held For John Krenek At Nada

Funeral services for John Krenek were held January 13 1962 at Triska Funeral Home El Campo and Nada Catholic Church. The Rev Father John Matocha presided with burial in Nada Catholic Cemetery. Surviving Krenek include three sons seven daughters 46 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He died January 11 1962 at age 78.

Lutheran Church Annual Meeting Se t for January 21 at 10 AM

The United Dr Martin Luther Church will hold its annual meeting next Sunday January 21 at 10 AM with a 10 minute devotional period. Sunday School and Bible Class begin at 9 AM. Members will elect four new councilmen review the 1962 budget and vote on recommendations. All confirmed communicant members may vote and teens are urged to attend.

Methodist Attendance Gains in Shiner Church Campaign

Sixty percent of Shiner Methodist Church members attended Holy Communion last Sunday amid a 16 week Attendance Campaign starting that day. Pastor John Gilbert explained the effort aims for 75 percent average attendance by Easter and urged faithful participation across churches to rekindle regular worship. Services Sunday are at 10 45 a m with Church School at 9 30 a m.

Connally to Broadcast First Statewide TV Appearance

John Connally lays out plans for his first statewide television appearance in the Texas governor race. The 30 minute program from the Rice Hotel features a background segment and his campaign speech, airing January 19 on 20 Texas stations starting 7 30 p.m. CST. Proceeds from a 3.00 per plate supper support the event and Connally plans additional statewide TV slots through May 5.

Emil Frank Kaluza a US Navy Veteran of World War II died at his home near La Grange January 10 1962 at 4 00 am Funeral services were held January 12 at Koenig Funeral Home Chapel and Amannsville Catholic Church Burial was in La Grange Cemetery Rosary was recited and KJT Society held simultaneous prayers He was born December 30 1913 in Holman married Annie Korenek November 28 1950 and farmed near La Grange Survived by wife two sons seven sisters three brothers and a Navy veteran brother-in-law and nephew relatives from Shiner attended the rites

Navy Opens Three Year First Term Enlistments

The Navy announces a three year first term enlistment program open to men with no prior training. An experimental plan allows re-enlistment for two or three years with up to 30 days advance leave for those released from active duty. Program runs until June 30 1962 and supports stay in school. Lavaca River Freezes Across Hallettsville

The Lavaca River at Hallettsville froze from bank to bank for the first time in 60 years as temperatures dropped to 12 degrees on Wednesday and 14 degrees on Thursday. The river runs about 35 feet wide at this point.

Guadalupe Valley Electric Co op reports peak loads on its lines during the recent cold spell. GVEC says Gonzales peak rose 50 percent above prior records with new highs at other co op sources. Farm Leader Lester Cranek To Washington

Dr. Lester Cranek president of Wharton County Farmers Union was invited by Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman to a Washington conference on land and water policy. The meeting will address changing land and water needs, rural adjustments, new uses for land and water, and shaping policies to aid rural living and family farming. Cranek, a National Soil and Water Conservation appointee, recently returned from a seven day Washington meeting and stresses family farming over giant cooperatives. The 1962 turkey crop is likely large but below 1961's 107 million, with storage ample and turkeys a solid food buy for months.

The Tax Assessor-Collector office announces sale of 1962 auto license plates on February 1. Owners must bring certificate of title and 1961 license receipt to obtain plates, with a March 31 deadline to avoid delays. Social Security Visit Set for Shiner January 22

A Victoria Social Security Office representative will be in Shiner at City Hall at 9 A.M. Monday January 22 1962 to help with retirement survivor and disability benefit claims. Beneficiaries under 72 earning over 1200 in 1961 must file a yearly earnings report by April 15 1962. Annuities pensions or investment income do not count toward the 1200 threshold.
