Young hunter Charles Welhausen aged 13 hunted with his father Ray but ventured alone to take a nine point buck on the Welhausen farm in the Dilworth area. He lined up his own shot and dressed the prize solo, while his father missed a spike.
The Shiner Public School P TA hosts a 7 30 p m Thursday science film on why jets cause loud cracking booms at all hours. Open to all residents and supporters.
Edgar Pfeil of Route 1 Shiner recorded rainfall totals for 1960 and 1961 in Shiner’s East End addition. The notes document seasonal measurements and local precipitation amounts for the two-year span.
Willibald Kleihege records annual totals for the Henkhaus Community. The list cites rainfall amounts for 1959 at 50.40 inches, 1958 at 37.30 inches, 1957 at 67.60 inches, and 1956 at 17.10 inches.

Ras Moore a farmer and rancher of Rt 2 Shiner died Christmas Day 1961 about 11 00 a m in Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Shiner at age 48 6 16 Funeral services were held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church Yoakum December 26 Interment was in Shiner City Cemetery Masonic rites led by Dan Autrey Yoakum Survivors include his wife Leona Moore mother Frieda Moore two daughters Melba Vogel and Dorothy Vogel two brothers Rex and Kenneth Moore sister Annie Indorf
Shiner’s volunteer firemen elected officers for 1962 at the annual meeting held January 3. Chief Wilbur Minear leads as Fire Chief with Ben Simper as Assistant Chief and W. C. Schmidt as President. Clarence Sembera won a 3 year term on the Pension Board. Only two city fires in 1961 caused $60 in losses, insured at $36.07, with causes lawnmower spark and a defective oil stove.
Members must pay 1962 dues at the First National Bank by February 28 deadline.
Postal rules change January 10 1962 require undeliverable second third and fourth class mail not forwarded to sender if Return Requested appears. Charges vary by class. waste disposal otherwise. Local and advertiser mail must carry correct addresses. mailing lists cost 5 cents per name with $1 minimum.
The Shiner Gazette asks subscribers to report address changes before they occur. New post office rules raise the notification fee from five to ten cents, effective January 10. If subscribers fail to update, the post office charges ten cents for the new address notice. Changing an existing subscription address costs about 30 cents due to stencil and mailing list updates.
Postmaster Arthur Ward reports 1961 gross receipts for the Shiner Texas Post Office at 26069.06, up from 24957.07 in 1960. The rise reflects steady growth in the area economy and Christmas mailing increases. Clerks listed are Edwin H. Pohler Marie E. Lahodny and Oscar W. Buesing. Rural routes serve about 3500 people with carriers Kasper Kram and Hughs on routes 1 2 and 3.
The first baby born in the New Year of 1962 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital was Sheryl Ann, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenward Stavinova of Moulton. She arrived January 3 at 6 30 am with Dr J D Wagner as attending physician. Hospital nurses and Shiner merchants including Elkins Quality Pharmacy and Frenchs presented gifts to the newborn.
From Pope John XXIII, will of his silver anniversary April Father Maneth of San Antonil, who received a silver medal 5, 1962. He is a brother of A. H. Maneth of Shiner.
Milton Jowers former Shiner High School faculty member and Southwest Texas State athletic director will be principal speaker at the Shiner High football banquet Saturday January 13 at 7 p.m. in the Cafetorium advance tickets available at local merchants.
Mrs. August F. Seifert of the Henkhaus Community died in a San Antonio hospital December 31 1961 at age 75 after nearly eight years of confinement. Funeral rites were held January 3 1962 at St Josephs Catholic Church Moulton with burial in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery. she was born September 27 1886 and survived by four sons. five daughters. 18 grandchildren. four great grandchildren and several siblings and in laws.
Mrs Frances J Polasek tax assessor collector will visit the First National Bank in Shiner on January 10 and 11 to assess state and county taxes for 1962.
Funeral services were held for Valentine Chilek of Route 2 Shiner on Tuesday January 2 1962 with a Requiem High Mass at St Ann s Church. Interment followed in St Ann s Cemetery near Yoakum. He died December 30 1961 at 11 40 pm at 82 years 10 months and 22 days after a 53 day hospital stay. He was a lifelong Dreyer resident and retired farmer survived by son Felix Chilek daughter Annie Hartel two foster daughters and many grandchildren great grandchildren and step‑children.
