Governor Price Daniel proclaims March 6 to March 10 1961 as Public Schools Week in Texas. He urges parents to visit schools and citizens to support education, stressing the need for educated leadership and the role of schools in forming foundations for future training.
The Federal Land Bank of Houston Board approved a reduction of one seventh of one percent in new loan rates effective January 1 1961. The bank also cut sixteenths of one percent on about 24 million dollars of loans at 6 percent until further notice. The bank serves 73 associations in Texas with over 235 million dollars in loans and funds operations through bond sales. Savings are expected for farm and ranch owners statewide.
Tex Tan held its 1961 National Specialty Sales Convention at the Ramada Inn in Dallas December 26 to 28 with Elmer Wheeler as after dinner speaker and C C Welhausen presenting the new 1961 program. Sales leaders Lewis Shows and John Cosby led the three day program with training and new Goofers casual footwear announced. The Saddlery and Footwear Division convention followed December 29 to 31 at Yoakum with Douglas Manning and Cliff Long in charge and a return of Western Billfolds belts moccasins and sandals to the line.
Congratulations to families welcoming three newborns. Brenda Sue Alton Tieken born Friday January 6 in Austin weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces with siblings and grandparents listed. Gary James Winkenwerder born December 30 in Wharton weighing 6 pounds 3 ounces. baptism sponsors named. Gary Walshak born January 4 in Gonzales weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces.
The Shiner lodge, home demonstration club, Knights of Columbus, Pack 231 and 232, VFW, KJT, RVOS Fire and Storm Insurance, Cub Scouts, and the Shiner Public School PTA announce January meetings. Highlights include D D G M Fred Pietsch visiting Shiner Lodge, PTA program by National Honor Society, and attendance prizes.
The Shiner Cemetery Association met with Mrs. Peck Welhausen on Friday January 6 with a good turnout. Yearly reports were given. the K of P Lodge turned over the City Cemetery to the association for upkeep. Mrs Welhausen resigned as treasurer after fifty years. Mrs Victor Stindt was elected to fill the vacancy and a complete roster of officers was named.
Mrs. Frances J. Polasek will visit the First National Bank in Shiner Wednesday and Thursday January 11 and 12 to assess state and county taxes for 1961.
Emil Jeff Konecny of Victoria died January 7 at the Veterans Hospital Houston one day before his 68th birthday. Funeral services were held January 9 in Shiner with a Requiem Mass at the Catholic Church and burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He was a WWI veteran and former ranch foreman. He is survived by three brothers and three sisters.
Members of the Shiner Dance Club are reminded to pay their 1961 club dues at the First National Bank. Dues are six dollars. Deadline for dues is February 28.
United Dr Martin Luther Church schedules its annual meeting for Sunday at 2 00 p m next Sunday morning service will be omitted to permit attendance four councilmen to be elected and a 1961 budget to be considered members may vote and ask questions Bulletins will be provided at the meeting for attendees
Funeral services for August R. Filip of Cuero were held January 3 1961 at Gonzales Catholic Church after a morning service at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rev Father Peter J Roebrooks officiating. Interment followed in Gonzales Cemetery.
John Thompson 80 died at his Nickel Community home Friday January 6. Funeral Saturday January 7 at 3 p.m. from Old Moulton Baptist Church with Rev Oscar Thompson Jr. officiating. Burial in Stonewall Cemetery. Survivors include wife, son Thomas, daughters Mrs Fairy Wells and Mrs Mary Ann Cook, and several siblings and grandchildren. Smith Funeral Home of Moulton in charge.
A Saturday January 14 recital titled Under The Big Top will be staged at the Public School Gym starting at 7 30 p m. Adults pay 35 cents and children 20 cents. Dancers from Shiner and Cuero perform including Brigid Miculka Debbie Bozka Sabrina Watzlavich Vicki Roeder Phyllis Roeder Lisa Wagner Jacque Cloutier Rhonda Dreyer Debbie Yates Judy Mraz Cynthia Welhausen Peggy Herder Ginny Williford and others with Mrs McManus appearing in a feature number. Public is invited.
The Game and Fish Commission reports 10,753 deer checked in Llano for the 1960 season, up from 9,220 last season. Biologist notes indicate steady hunting pressure and modal data.
Lavaca County's first traffic fatality of 1961 was Floyd Howard White 27 native of Moulton He died January 4 after a one car crash Sunday his car left a rural road near Moulton and hit a ditch He worked at Moulton Oil Mill and is survived by his wife two daughters a son and grandparents funeral plans were set for Waelder and Moulton Negro Methodist Church.
David Janecek, son of Mr and Mrs Julius Janecek of Moulton, was seriously hurt Saturday January 7 after jumping a barbed wire fence at his home. He punctured his spleen during the fall and required seven pints of blood for an emergency operation at Shiner Hospital. He remains in the hospital for about ten days and is a sophomore at Moulton High School.
Funeral services will be held Thursday January 12 1961 at 3 30 p m at the Methodist Church in Shiner for Otto Turek age 58 years 9 months 16 days who died at Nix Hospital in San Antonio on Wednesday January 11 at 1 00 a m The body will rest in state at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner until noon Thursday then to the church for services Burial will be in SPJST Cemetery Shiner.
Mrs. Henry Hefenbrock of Flatonia died at 76 after a sudden illness. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Albert S. Johnson officiating. Burial in Flatonia City Cemetery. Survived by husband Henry, two daughters Margaret Billingsley and Jimmie Smith, two sons Wesley and Maj Harry Hefenbrock, one brother Ed Lee Kloss, and four grandchildren.
Anton Lesak died at home on Wallace Street December 31 1960 at age 68. Funeral held January 2 1961 at St James Catholic Church Gonzales with burial in City Cemetery. Survived by wife two sons a daughter and one sister. pallbearers listed. He was born May 4 1892 in Czechoslovakia and lived in Gonzales and Shiner since age 20. He married Angeline Simersky in 1913.

William Gerum will again provide income tax service for Farm Bureau members starting January 12 and available in the office Tuesday through Saturday each week for the season. Also notes Frank Sinatra and pals set to entertain in Las Vegas at Palace Theatre on weekend shows.
The Texas Health Department reported 23 diphtheria cases in 1960, the worst year since 1955 when 260 were recorded. December added 64 cases in Hale County causing Plainview outbreak. December total reached 104 with 60 in the last week. The five year median is 163. Gonzales reports second fatal diphtheria in two weeks a 6 year old girl among six cases since December 23.

Mrs. J. W. Torbett Sr. widow of the Torbett Hospital founder died Wednesday January 4 1961 at age 90. The hospital established in 1898 has been a landmark in Marlin. She earlier lived in Sherman Waco Flatonia and La Grange where she taught piano and voice. Funeral services were held in Marlin at 4 00 p.m. Thursday.
