Second Annual Science Fair Set For Parish Gym In March

St Ludmila's Academy announced its second annual Science Fair to be held at the Catholic Parish Gymnasium the weekend of March 9 1963. Pupils in the science department prepared projects since fall 1962 under faculty guidance with many entries across biology chemistry and general science.

Funeral Services Held Monday For Mrs Selma Fehner

Funeral services were held Monday February 11 1963 at 2 30 pm from Seydler Funeral Home Gonzales for Mrs Selma Fehner who died February 9 in Crews Hospital. Rev John Jacobs conducted the rites with burial in City Cemetery. She was born March 31 1895 in Fayette County daughter of Adolph and Mary Klaus and married November 17 1915 to Egon Fehner. Survivors include her husband two sons Elgin of Cheapside and Odis of Gonzales five brothers and two sisters. pallbearers listed.

Sunday Rural Fire Destroys Home Barn Near Yoakum

A fire at about 9:00 a.m. Sunday on old Shiner road three miles north of Yoakum destroyed a house and two barns, with a larger barn saved. The home owned by Arthur Brod burned after an oil cook stove exploded in the kitchen, spreading flames before discovery. Elderly occupant Albrecht and a relative were in the barn at the time. contents of all three buildings were lost.

Juniors To Launch Magazine Drive At Shiner High

The Junior Class of Shiner High School begins a magazine subscription drive on February 25. Members will contact students to offer subscriptions, with readers urged to notify a junior if not contacted. Next week's issue will provide additional details.

Funeral services for Mike Benes Jr in Shiner

Impressive military honors marked the funeral for Mike Benes Jr on February 6 1963 in Shiner with burial at Shiner City Cemetery. The service honored his four years and seven months in the U S Army including overseas duty in Germany Italy and France. He was 46 and survived by his wife Georgie and two sons Mike Ray III and Larry Gene.

Board Re-elects Supt Little Names Trustee

The Board of Trustees of the Shiner Independent School District met in regular session Monday night February 11. Superintendent Little was re elected and given a two year contract. J Jack Cloutier was appointed to fill the unexpired two year term of Mike Benes Jr who died.

Lavaca County OKs Rural Fire Support Payments

Lavaca County Commissioners approve annual payments of 500 to the Shiner and Moulton fire departments to cover labor during rural firefighting outside city limits. The court also names Ross Terry as delinquent tax suits attorney and approves $50 monthly travel for the county judge. Salary hikes include Precinct 6 justice and the county treasurer. Wedding celebration attended by several residents noted.

Donkey Parade Draws Shiner Crowd in February 1963

Gwenavere gave birth to Lancelot on February 7 1963 and sparked a citywide recall of old school days. Donkey, dubbed an ass by Websters, attracted all ages as a major local draw. Grandson Howard Esse of San Angelo owns Lancelot and has declined sales offers. The proposal for a park bridle path may be approved to delight future generations of Shiner youngsters.

Annual Oyster Supper Marked By Fire Department Hospitality

Members of the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department hosted their annual oyster supper Tuesday night January 29 at City Hall recreation room. Visiting firemen from neighboring towns, honorary members, and guests enjoyed oyster cocktails fried oysters and coffee during the hospitality hour under Chief Wilbur Minear's presidency.
