Fire destroys two story barn on Wied farm in Hallettsville
A two story barn on the John C. Kalisek place at Wied burned early Sunday morning with 800 bushels of corn 3000 pounds of cotton seed 500 bales of hay and three calves lost. Calves faced death from the flames while two chicken houses with 350 chicks were saved by Hallettsville firefighters. Contents were uninsured though the barn itself was covered. The cause is undetermined and the Kaliseks were away in Flor esville when alerted.

Christmas Tree of Light Returns to Welhausen Park
Santa Claus arrived Friday December 4 at 5:00 pm amid a large crowd in Welhausen Park for the Tree of Light festival. Shi ner High School band opened the program while Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts performed. Junior Catholic Daughters and various Brownie and Intermediate troops provided carols under leaders including Mrs. Lillian Guettner and Miss Louise Orsak. E J Henkhaus drove Santa on a red fire truck with Fire Chief Wilbur Minear. Chamber of Commerce and Business Men's Club handed out 1500 bags of fruit candy and toys as the illuminated tree lit the children’s festival scene in front of the Welhausen home.
