W. L. Martin Foundation Fund created at Shiner High

W. L. Martin named a six person committee chaired by Supt. Leslie to oversee a $1000 fund for annual medals in Mathematics Oratory and English for Shiner High School seniors. Four gold medals will be awarded 1929 30 with plans to expand as funds grow. The fund targets both boys and girls and honors Mr. Martin’s belief in education.

Graf Zeppelin completes a spectacular Pacific crossing and ties up at Mines Field Los Angeles at 5 35 am after a sub three day Tokio to Los Angeles leg. A cheering crowd of about 75000 witnessed the moment as the airship anchored the mooring post ending the third lap of its world tour.

Shiner Public School Opens September 9 With New staffing

The 1929-30 term starts September 9 under Superintendent T H Leslie with Walter A Schulz as principal and a full slate of teachers for English Latin algebra bookkeeping seventh through primary grades. Piano and violin instruction continue. attendance ages extend to eight to sixteen. term length six months. colored school to begin in October with A B Robinson as principal. Return summer library books by August 31. Per capita state funding increases to seventeen dollars fifty cents. Regular free-school status for six-year-olds begins after the 1929-30 term.

Terrell Reports Sharp Drop in Texas Cotton Yield

Commissioner George B. Terrell releases an August estimate showing Texas cotton at 4,350,000 bales versus the Federal projection of 4,798,000. The national forecast totals 15,543,000 bales, about three and a quarter times Texas. Terrell notes a half million bale decline since the prior report, confirming his August forecast as a reliable guide.

Farm Board to Advance Funds to Cotton Cooperatives

Washington reports the Federal Farm Board tentatively agreed to supply financial advances to cotton cooperative associations to aid this year’s crop. The plan provides 90 percent financing from federal banks and board, plus 10 percent from the cooperatives' capital reserves, enabling orderly sale and timely payoffs to distressed growers. Carl Williams of Oklahoma praised the move as exactly what cotton growers want.

Mrs Louisa Marburger 1862 66 Dies in Shiner Texas

Mrs Louisa Marburger born December 6 1862 in Driesen Brandenburg Germany came to Texas at age 11 settling first in Shelby County then La Vaca County. She married William Marburger January 1 1881 and had four children two died young. She died August 24 at 5 30 pm aged 66 years 8 months 18 days leaving two children a foster son nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at her home and Witting Cemetery with Rev J C A Pfenninger and Lutheran Choir. pallbearers named.
