A heavy rain of 2.55 inches fell Tuesday evening. It may hinder cotton gathering and lower grade. Cotton is spotted though yield may exceed last year. Mrs. Flessner on town outskirts harvested 3 bales from six acres, with 2 more in view. Farmers report about a bale per acre. picking paid about $1.25 per bale.
The text books for rural schools have arrived at the office of the County Superintendent. All rural teachers are requested to get their books before September 5th.
United Dr Luther Church announces Sunday School at 10 a m with no 11 a m service. On the fifth Sunday an English service is at 11 a m. Junior Choir shifts to Saturday 29th at 6 p m. Fall Feast planned for first Sunday in September at Blucher Park. Rev Richard Schuetze quotes law and gospel.
Christian Science services announce the Lesson-Sermon for August 3 with the Golden Text from II Timothy 1:7 asserting God gives a sound mind, power, and love. Citations include Romans 11:33 highlighting the depth of God’s riches and wisdom.
The Methodist Church invites all to a spirit filled service next Sunday with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Worship Service at 11 a.m. Pastor A. C. Peterson announces the sermon I Will Build My Church. Fifth Sunday service planned for August 30 at 11 a.m. Watch paper for details.
The revival at Shiner Baptist Church continues through Sunday night August 23 with morning services at 10 and evening services at 9. Rev Burns preaches in the evening from Revelation chapters two and three. Morning and evening services are open to worshippers with strong crowds noted.
Emmanuel Lutheran Church invites visitors to English services on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at 4 p m Pastor Henry C Nickel leads the services and welcomes all parishioners and newcomers.
San Antonio sheriff investigators broke up wartime tire theft ring with outlets in an exclusive suburb. About $7,000 in stolen tires from Dallas to the Rio Grande valley are expected to be recovered as six men are jailed and more under surveillance. Towns raided include Alice, Lockhart, Burnet, Thorndale, Columbus, Range, La Grange and Shiner. Local operator Ben Marcak reported 20 tires missing.
The Red Cross First Aid Lay Instructor's Course took place in Yoakum during the first week of August with Raul Papish of St. Louis as instructor. The 15 hour program certifies teachers to organize and conduct Standard and Advanced Red Cross First Aid courses. Participants have at least 45 hours of First Aid training and may contact Mrs. Julia Wolters to join future classes.
The War Production Board announces Order L 181 restricting men’s work clothing to reduce fabric use and improve durability. It bans excess pockets, reduces heavy fabric and trim, and sets limits on stitching and material thickness for garments such as overalls coats shirts and pants effective August 15 1942, with projected savings in cloth thread buttons and buckles.
Joseph Derrich Sr., aged 89 years, 6 months, and 3 days, died Tuesday after a long illness at the family home. Funeral Requiem High Mass at St. Joseph’s Church was led by Monsignor Netardus with interment in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Surviving are five daughters, three sons, twelve grandchildren, and one sister in Germany. his wife had died earlier that year. Pallbearers included Raymond Machart, Edwin Derrich, Laddie Stavinohn, Chas Kurtz, Joe Nagelmueller, and Joe Anderle. honorary pallbearers were St. Joseph’s Society members. Revered as a Christian neighbor, he lived a life of service to family and church. Numerous out-of-town relatives attended the services.
Robert Wolters Jr the two week old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Wolters of Houston died in a Galveston hospital and was buried in Shiner City Cemetery on Sunday August 16 Rev Wolf of Gonzales officiated at the services.
Mr and Mrs Fred E Koen ning welcomed a baby girl named Norma Jean born August 12. The family confirms the joyful arrival and adds that both mother and child are healthy.

A meeting of all rural teachers and trustees is scheduled for Saturday September 5 in the District Court Room Hallettsville Texas. The session will begin at 9 30 A M and all teachers and trustees are urged to attend.
Clifton Monroe, stationed with Standard Oil on Aruba for three years, arrived in Shiner on Saturday to visit his parents and former neighbors. The Caribe sports paper notes he has found many friends in his adopted home, and below is the send-off he received before returning to the States.
Caribe basketball coach Clif Monroe plans to leave Aruba around the fourth of next month for a well earned vacation in the United States. The club lauds him as irreplaceable both as player and coach, credits Caribe’s recent championship to his tireless work, and wishes him a pleasant trip before resuming duties upon return.

Ration stamps 6 and 7 remain valid for two pounds of sugar and expire by August 22. Stamp 8 becomes valid for five pounds during ten weeks from August 23 to October 31. Office of Price Administration notes no change to the baseline one half pound per person per week, but allows larger purchases.
Infant son of Pfc. and Mrs. Herman Grun born in the local hospital died and was laid to rest in Shiner City Cemetery on Saturday evening August 15. Pfc. Grun, stationed at Camp Barkeley, attended the funeral. mother was formerly Miss Doris Wagner. This was their first child. The Gazette extends sympathy to the bereaved survivors.
Tom Mikes a resident of Shiner died Saturday evening August 15 at 8 o clock at the local hospital after a two month illness. He was 60 years 2 months and 15 days old. Requiem High Mass was held at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church with Rev Edmund Bily. Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He was survived by his wife four sisters two brothers three half brothers and one half sister. He was a loyal church member and active in the R P J Sv I Catholic Lodge.

Mr and Mrs Emil Koranek and sons. Mrs Frank Krejci Sr. Mr Albert Krejci and family of Moulton. Mr and Mrs Joe Kuss of Sweetwater. Mr Tom Krejci and son of Hallettsville. Pvt Eugene Krejci of Camp Blanding Florida. and Mrs Lewis Craft and daughter of Brownwood.
Garden Club members will meet with Mrs Alois Kasper on Friday August 21 at 4 pm All members are urged to attend.
Our sincere appreciation is hereby expressed to all who took consoling interest in us during the illness and bereavement when death took our beloved husband and brother, Tom Mikes. We thank Dr. Wagner and the nurses, Rev. Edmund Bily and the Lodge, and all who visited and brought flowers for his resting place. May God bless you and reward you. His Wife, Sisters and Brothers.
The Dilworth Catholic Parish holds its annual picnic at Kokernot Grove on Sunday August 23. Supper served at 6 30 p m Adults 45c children 25c. Patek s Band provides music for the dance at night. Admission to dance Gents 35c ladies 4c tax. Everyone invited to support a worthy cause.
Austin dispatch reports that local selective boards will induct all fifth registration registrants who have just turned 20. No national lottery for 18 to 20 age group. Inductions to proceed by order number based on birth dates. About 132000 Texas men were listed in the 18-20 bracket at the June 30 registration.
Government and county agents will present patriotic leadership certificates to Lavaca County community and neighborhood leaders. Meetings are Aug 22 Hallettsville 3 PM District Court Room, Aug 24 Moulton 9 PM High School Gym, Aug 25 Shiner 9 AM City Hall, Aug 28 Sweet Home 9 AM High School, Aug 31 Moravia 9 PM Moravia Hall.

Our thanks to all who donated Victrola records to the Army Drive. About 600 records were sent to the designated collection point this past week by the American Legion and Auxiliary.
Joe Zapalac, long sought by officers after his disappearance and prior rejection by Army officials at Fort Sam Houston, has been located in San Antonio. He is safe and will be returned to his home.
The Shiner Public School P T A met in regular session at Mrs. Hugh Koether's home with the president presiding. The theme for the year's study was Better Youth for a Better World. Seniors and Juniors will register the Saturday before school opens. A social hour followed with a refreshing lunch.
Washington reports that sugar ration stamp No. 8 will be valid for five pounds during the ten week period from August 23 to October 31. The move preserves the weekly share of half a pound per person while enabling larger purchases and aiding distribution of five 10 and 25 pound packages. stamps 6 and 7 for two pounds remain usable until August 22 with stamp 7 providing a two pound bonus.
J. R. Mikesh Erwin and Walter Henkhaus endured a long morning at Millers Point catching speckled and white sand trout. After five hours Mikesh stopped fishing. they reported 104 pounds dressed. The office force wonders if the fish tasted as good as claimed.
The Charlottenburg School Board elected Prof. E. T. Hinck Miss Rubie Mae Stoeltje and Mrs. Victor Schroeder to the teaching staff for the 1942 to 1943 term.
The Blessed Virgin Society will hold a meeting Sunday August 23 after the second Mass. All members are asked to be present.
Mrs. E. G. Buske has consented to serve as Chairman of the Soldiers Kits. Those who want to assist in this work contact Mrs. Buske and she will inform you as to your duties. Mrs. C. B. Welhausen thanks friends for flowers cards letters visits and messages of cheer during her recent illness expressing sincere appreciation for the courtesies received.
Former Governor Dan Moody said he will vote for Judge James V. Allred in the approaching senatorial runoff. He stated the choice is due to the present situation, not personal feeling, and that he is not dictating to others. Moody spoke five days before the election as Allred and Senator O'Daniel ramp up campaigning.
