Joseph Derrich Sr aged 89 years six months and three days died at home on Tuesday August 11 at 5 20 PM. Funeral from the family residence Thursday at 9 45 AM to the Catholic Church for Requiem Mass. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. A write up will appear in next week's Gazette.
United Dr Martin Luther Church announces Sunday School at 10 a m and Divine Service at 11 a m along with German service Wednesday at 3 30 p m Women of the Church host. Rev Hahn of Cuero will speak on liturgical worship, drawing interest from Yoakum conference attendees. A Ladies Aid committee plans a Service Flag dedication for forty two boys, with an elaborate program to follow. If your son is not on the Honor Roll, see the pastor. The piece ends with a Bible verse and a quoted remark about belief.
The Christian Science weekly Lesson Sermon for Sunday August 16 centers on the Golden Text from Psalms 35 9 declaring joyful trust in the Lord. Citations include Proverbs 2 10 11 highlighting wisdom entering the heart and preservation through understanding.

Mrs Marian Moore of Paris Texas was chosen as High School English Teacher to fill the vacancy from Mrs Lola Pohler. She taught last year in Broken Bow Oklahoma. Miss Margie Wehmeyer of San Marcos will start as Home Economics teacher August 24 replacing Mrs Ava Ann Welhausen. Miss Ebba Munson of Georgetown was elected Social Studies teacher in the upper elementary grades to replace Miss Flora Forgy who resigned for McAllen Public Schools.
Mr and Mrs Frank Patek welcomed a baby girl named Helen Marie at the local hospital on Monday. Mr and Mrs Frank C Wagner welcomed a baby boy named Dennis Joseph born August 7 and will raise him at home.
Mr and Mrs Jim Patek celebrate the birth of their baby boy on August 8 in a family announcement. The report notes the new arrival and the parents’ happiness.
The Women s Missionary Society of Dr Martin Lutheran Church will host a lecture on the Altar by Rev A H Hahn of Cuero at 3 30 p m. All congregation members are invited to attend the event and learn from the speaker.
Shiner solicits public donations to fill 200 care kits for overseas soldiers. Each kit costs $1.00 and is funded by local contributions. All residents are urged to prepare at least one kit, with church groups and organizations also participating. Donations accepted at the First National Bank. Julia Wolters, Chairman.
Public invited to the High School Gymnasium on Thursday night August 13 for a general call of all civilian defense volunteers including ladies in first aid. Bring pencil and paper.
Mary Antonette Buenger, born in Indus try Austin County, died at 2 45 AM Wednesday after a fall fractured hip. She moved from Yoakum to 511 North South Street after her husband’s death in 1914. Survived by sons Emil Otto Elo all of Yoakum and daughter Frieda Coldewey of Shiner. three of eight brothers and two sisters had predeceased her. Funeral at Holy Cross Lutheran Church August 6 with Rev Paul Bechter. burial Oak Grove Cemetery.
Austin August 10 The Commissioner of Agriculture J E McDonald urges Texas cotton farmers not to sell below 22 cents for 15 16 middling at FOB ports or mill centers. He promotes using government loans to reach parity and warns labor shortages may cut harvests. Congress fixes parity near 21 47 to 22 and guarantees loan sales above parity.
The Farm Security Administration offers 1 year operating loans and 1 to 5 year capital goods loans to low income farmers with financing needs. The Tenant Purchase Program is open for applicants who wish to buy farms. Eligible applicants include married, new farmers who can secure tools and a suitable farm. Albert O. Hensley of San Antonio takes over as Area Supervisor for the State Department of Public Welfare with Seguin offices. A 20 year social work veteran and former Red Cross and Texas Relief Commission staffer, he will reside in Seguin with wife and two children. He succeeds Mrs. Pritchett, now a field Representative supervising several areas.
Calendar notes for Shiner High School show the 1942 43 session beginning September 7 with faculty meeting September 4 and student registration September 5 7. Classes start September 8. The faculty includes J Mil Auld E Folk Weaver Marian Moore Margie Wehmeyer Gordon Brandeberry Porter Ross and others teaching English Spanish science homemaking and vocational subjects.

If skin or eyes contact occurs, blot with cloth, wash with soap and water, and use baking soda or peroxide as directed. Blistered skin, breathing trouble, or chest oppression require medical attention.
Judge Mansfield visited Shiner on Friday August 7 as a guest of local business leaders at Meyer Cafe. He spoke on Congress matters, toured the city streets, and discussed municipal affairs with city officials, drawing praise for his long service and popular support in Congress and the district.

A wedding took place at Shiner Catholic Church Monday as Pvt Johnnie Vincik and Miss Annie Hanzelka were united in a double ring ceremony by Rev Edmund Bily. The bride daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Hanzelka wore a dark green dress with a gold cross necklace and borrowed wrist watch. The groom, with Uncle Sam in Camp Barkeley Abilene, Texas, wore his army uniform. A grand dinner followed at the groom’s home and friends offered warm congratulations.
Geo. W. Cox M. D. State Chairman of Health and Emergency Medical Service releases guidance on bathroom and laundry soap use with common household materials. The notice was received by local Chief Air Raid Warden Paul Klekar and promises more information to follow.
The Shiner Chamber of Commerce held a regular August meeting minutes read and approved. Auditing committee Schmidt Wolters and Welhausen certified the secretary books as correct and well kept. Nominating committee proposed E C Wolters as president A H Kasper first vice P R Otto second vice Glade Welhausen third vice Peck Welhausen treasurer C C Amsler and Max L Wolters directors. report approved. Secretary L E Denmark signed.
Public Weigher L. M. Roeder reports 112 bales of cotton weighed in Shiner up to Tuesday night.
The Auxiliary Fireboys enjoyed a barbecue at the dam Tuesday night with guests Mayor Garbade Fire Chief Richter and Instructor John E Kasper. An enjoyable evening was spent.
The U S Navy expands its V-5 program offering officer pilot training and 49 trade and vocational schools. Chief Potts in Victoria urges physically capable men aged 18 to 27 to apply now to train as pilots or Petty Officers, with the recruiting station operating until 6 pm daily.
