Catholic Parish Picnic Set for September 27 at Blucher Park

The local Catholic Parish schedules its annual picnic at Blucher Park on September 27 following a Parish Hall meeting Sunday night. A dinner of chicken sausage and stew will be served with trimmings and Pateks Band will provide music for daytime events and the evening dance. Further details will be announced.

Red Cross Report From Shiner Seams and Knits Soared

Since January the women of Shiner have sewed 604 garments knitted 126 sweaters and 94 other knitted articles. Weekly submissions arrive and residents are urged to call their chairman for desired work. Soldier kits are expected next week and everyone is invited to participate in making and filling them. Mansfield plaque unveiled Monday amid tears at Driskill

In Austin at the Crystal Ballroom Miss Lenora Schmidt unveiled a bronze memorial plaque to Joseph Jefferson Mansfield. The event honored the Columbus judge with the granite dam bearing his name. Congressman Mansfield wept as the crowd sang The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You, after Roy Miller spoke.

Draft will get 3-A men by fall

Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, National Selective Service director, said re classification of all married men would begin in October and certainly by Christmas. He noted we will run out of single men in a few months and must turn to married men, prioritizing those with a wife or secondary dependents. He urged entering the Army now for those with dependents. He also warned that the number of able bodied men in industry must be drastically reduced soon.

Frank Olbrich Sr. Laid To Rest Monday

Frank Olbrich Sr. died August 22 after long illness at 78 years. Funeral Mass conducted by Monsignor Netardus with Rev E J Bily at home and grave. Burial in local Catholic Cemetery follows a large turnout and floral tributes. Surviving are wife Anna Jurica and children Joe Frankl Annie Angela Rosie. one daughter Mrs Anton Geisler was murdered in 1926.

Hauschild Home Destroyed By Fire

The home of Mrs. Marie Hauschild about 112 miles east of town was destroyed by fire Monday night. Neighbors discovered the blaze about 9 p.m. and saved some bedding furniture and a small amount of clothing. Nothing was saved from the kitchen where the fire started. Mrs Hauschild her son in law and her daughter Mr and Mrs Victor Kellner were in town at the time. No insurance was carried on the home or contents.

Mrs Louise Stach was notified of the sudden death of her brother J F Schindler at his Marlin home at 12 30 p m Friday. Mrs Stach and Miss Louise attended the funeral Saturday. Her many friends extend sympathy in her great sorrow.

Richard Schaefer dies suddenly in Meyersville

The Shiner community extends sympathy to Mrs. Louis Trautwein on the death of her brother Richard Schaefer who died of a heart attack. Burial was held Saturday morning. He is survived by his widow two sons one brother and five sisters. The Gazette expresses its condolences.

Largest American convoy docks in England arrives

London dated August 23 reports the largest American convoy yet to cross the Atlantic in this war has arrived at multiple British ports with vast quantities of war materiel and crack fighting units eager to get it over with.

Ten Per Cent Cut In Coffee Ordered In War Era

Washington reports the war production board ordered a further 10 percent reduction in coffee available to American consumers effective September 1. The cut equals about 15 million pounds monthly, due to shipping difficulties between South American countries and the United States. Wholesalers retailers and other receivers face a quota drop from 75 percent to 65 percent of the average monthly 1941 deliveries.

Air Raid Wardens Radio Program on Air in Texas

Air Raid Wardens in Texas will learn how their organization functions during an actual air raid in the third installment of a thirteen broadcast series titled Texans on the Alert. The National Defense Committee for Texas presents the public service feature on Texas Quality Network Stations Sunday August 30 from 2:00 to 2:15 p.m. The program is directed by John W. Gunsstrom and written by Mrs. Blithe Hamilton Beal. Stations WFAA KPRC WBAP and WOAI will carry the series.

Mrs Hy J Neumann 39, lifelong resident dies at hospital

Ella Meta Bertha Remmers Neumann died Thursday August 20 at 7 15 am in the local hospital at age 39 years 8 months and 4 days. She married Henry J Neumann November 16 1924 and leaves two children Ann Amarylis 15 and Henry Jay 8. Survived by parents Fred and Mrs Remmers and several siblings. Reposed at Remmers home with funeral at United Dr Martin Luther Church and burial in Shiner City Cemetery.

The Public Schools open the new session without a formal program citing tires gasoline and time as reasons. Seniors and Juniors register September 5th at 9 00 A M while all other students register September 7th at 9 00 A M.
