Willie Joe Velek dies at 37 in Shiner funeral Monday

Funeral services were held for Willie Joe Velek age 37 at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor and Shiner Catholic Church with Rev. J J Hanacek officiating. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He died August 14 in Temple after a brief illness. Survived by wife Bessie and two daughters Frances and Dorothy, two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral Rites Held for John Recek in St Marys Area

John Recek 82 was found dead at his home near St Marys Tuesday night. Justice of the Peace O T Shoemake ruled natural death after investigation. Kubena Funeral Home handled the services with a Requiem Mass at St Marys Church. Survivors include two sons Anton and Matthew and five daughters, twenty nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren. He was a member of the K J T Society and active in church work.

Shiner VFW to Show Free War Films Tonight

Shiner VFW Post 6209 meets at Shiner High School Gym August 19 at 7 45 p m. Navy recruiters from Victoria will present three Pacific war reels including To the Shores of Iwo Jima after the business session. Free admission for the public. Navy medals available to eligible veterans with proper discharge papers. Ladies Auxiliary also meets at City Hall Library.

Funeral Rites Held for Mrs. Joe Heger Sr at Moulton

Mrs. Joe Heger Sr. died in San Antonio on August 14 at 10 40 p m aged 7 8 12. Funeral services were at St Joseph s Church Moulton with a Requiem Mass and burial in the local Catholic cemetery. Survivors include six daughters and five sons among other relatives.

Fire Burns Sear Frank Jemelka at Country Home

Shi ner Fire Department responded Thursday to Frank Jemelka’s country home where an oil cook stove ignited. He suffered severe burns to hands arms and face while fighting the blaze. Kitchen repairs and dining room smoke damage follow.

Fire crews save bridge on Rocky Creek

The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department arrived at 4 30 p m Wednesday and quickly extinguished a grass and drift fire under the wagon bridge on Rocky Creek just outside the city limits. Some boards were damaged and replacements needed. County Commissioner Joe Kouba warned that a main gas line crosses the decking and a larger blaze could cripple local industries.

Peter Zbranek Jr Buried After Catholic Rites

Funeral services for Peter Zbranek Jr 44 were held at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor then Shiner Catholic Church with Requiem High Mass officiated by Rev R C Hoffmann Rosary was recited at the parlor August 14 Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery He died August 12 in Rusk Hospital after long illness born April 1 1904 in Kokernot Gonzalez County survived by parents two sisters and three brothers with pallbearers named.

Messer LaCoume Rites Read In St Patrick's Cathedral

Miss Joyce Messer and Le Roy F LaCoume wed at St Patrick's Cathedral Galveston at 8 am with family present. The bride wore white satin with lace and a net yoke, orange blossom coronet, and white asters. The groom is a Galveston native, a Coast Guard veteran. The ceremony featured gray suits and carnation boutonnieres, and a wedding breakfast followed. Both families extend best wishes for a long, happy marriage.

Postal Rates to Rise January First 1949

Effective January 1 1949 air mail rises from 5c to 6c and postcards by air become 4c. Third class mail up half a cent for first two ounces. Bulk rate under permit up 2c per pound with 1c per piece minimum retained. Parcel post up about 28 percent. Books at 8c for first pound and 4c for each additional pound. Special delivery up to 15c from 13c. No change in second class mail rates.

Earline Kroulik Weds Aaron L Hall In Candlelight Ceremony

Earline Kroulik and Aaron L Hall united in marriage at First Methodist Church in a 6 30 p m ceremony. The bride wore a white marquesette gown with cathedral train and pearl necklace while her sister Ro land Anderson and Marthalyn Valenta served as attendants. The groom and groomsmen wore tuxedos with white carnations. A reception followed at the bride’s home. After a wedding trip to Colorado the couple will reside in Austin. Earline is a Shiner High School graduate 1942 and has worked in Austin. Aaron is a Bangs High School graduate and Army Air Corps veteran who is attending State University.

The Waldrop Creamery, once Purity Creamery, has grown from a three employee start in 1927 to a large complex with two dairies six milk routes and refrigerated fleet reaching 70 miles including Houston Corpus Christi and San Antonio. On Saturday August 21 Shi ner High School homemaking students will display summer projects in the City Hall Chamber of Commerce room from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Miss Margaret Strube notes the exhibit will be well rounded with dresses uniforms foods canned and cooking samples.
