Texas curfew law takes effect Monday August 9 restricting beer and wine sales after midnight on most days with 1am allowance on Saturdays and Sunday restrictions starting after 1pm. Public consumption is banned after midnight except 1:15am on Saturdays with Sunday rules prohibiting consumption before 1pm.
Dorothy Jemelka two and a half year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Jemelka suffered a deep gash after a fruit jar fell on her foot at her grandparents home last Thursday evening She was taken to town for medical care and is recovering nicely
Anton Harbers of Dreyer delivered the first bale of cotton to the Dreyer Gin last Wednesday. The bale was ginned free by Mr. Anton Adamex and was bought by G. H. Mueller for 20 cents per pound.

Shiner Baptist Church outlines a revival in progress at the Dreyer Baptist Church with nightly services beginning at 9 p.m. Cecil Harper, pastor, invites worshippers and notes strong Sunday School attendance with morning sermons and evening prayer meetings led by Bro J Mil Auld during the pastor's absence.
Cpl. Rudy Filip is stationed at Camp Wolters after entering service on April 20, 1942. Pfc. Robin Filip serves at Robins Field, Georgia. Pfc. Rufus Filip is at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin after enlisting on February 3, 1941.
Mrs Amalie Tampke, 81, died at her home in Charlottenburg on Saturday August 7 at 1 p.m. Funeral services were held from Eschenburg Funeral Parlor, with a Requiem Mass at the local Catholic Church and burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include son Fred Foelker, five daughters, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
The Banjes Home Democratic club schedules a picnic at the Swimming Pool on Sunday evening August 15 at 8 PM. Members are asked to bring supper dishes and sugar.

Miss Dorothy Jean Blohm visited Shiner on Sunday en route to Houston where she has accepted a position in the laboratory of the Synthetic Rubber Plant. Mrs and Mrs Jerome Kocian and children of Houston spent the weekend with relatives here and at Komensky.
Music and romance fill Palace Theatre as Tahiti Hon Ey starring Simone Simon and Dennis O'Keefe plays Tuesday and Wednesday. Marie Lahodny seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Anton Lahodny underwent emergency appendectomy Sunday and is recovering well. Mrs Milton Westphal and daughter left for Houston Sunday. Anna Lorence Janicek of Temple visits Miss Madlyn Jo Hajek. Publisher O F Knape of the Moulton Eagle was a business visitor here Saturday.
C J Monroe marries Miss Alice Virginia Sweeny in a June 26 ceremony at Lago Community Church Aruba N W Col Lewis presents the bride. A reception followed and the couple flies to Curacao for their honeymoon. Monroe, long a Shiner resident, worked four years for Lago Oil and Transport Co Aruba. His bride hails from Parkersburg West Virginia. The Gazette offers best wishes for a long happy life.
County Agent G. C. King urges culling 20 percent or more of hens to save about 72 million pounds of feed in two months as feed remains scarce. Confine hens at night and quietly remove weak, diseased, or unproductive birds, including roosters, to provide meat, preserve ration points, and generate cash.
The Luth eran Women's Society and their families and friends enjoyed an outdoor supper at the Sulphur Park Swimming Pool on Sunday night August 1 at 8 p.m. After the meal the evening featured contests and other amusements.
Messrs and Mesdames Emil Ernest and Ed Hajek and Madlyn Jo Hajek attended the funeral of their relative Mrs Joe Skalik held at Praha last Tuesday.
Thomas Husinecky, born December 17 1866 in Czechoslovakia, was laid to rest Sunday after a Requiem High Mass at Shiner Catholic Church. He lived in Lavaca County and left two daughters Mrs Louis Wagner of Cistern and Mrs Jim Patek of Shiner, plus a son Tom who died four years ago, with fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren surviving. The KJT society attended, and casket bearers included Chas Wagner and Chas Patek. The Gazette extends sympathy to the bereaved.
Members of St Elizabeth's Society will receive Holy Communion in a body on the fourth Sunday at second Mass. A meeting will be held after Mass. Members please attend.
Miss Edith Novak returned Sunday from a visit with friends in Houston. Mrs. C. L. Williams is recovering rapidly from a recent illness and is a patient in the local hospital. Mr. K. Spoetzl has been a patient there and is mending nicely and able to be up for a few hours each day.
Mr John G Hollman of Sao Paulo Brazil announces the engagement of his daughter Clarice Georgette to Lt Joe W Neal of San Antonio son of Mr and Mrs B Y Neal of that city Miss Hollman a UT Austin graduate and Delta Delta Delta member is stationed in Laredo employed by the government Lt Neal a UT Austin graduate was on the UT faculty before joining the army He is assigned to Camp Wolters Plans for the wedding are indefinite At Shiner Chamber of Commerce meeting August 5 changes were made to its by laws increasing board size to twelve Directors Meetings now on the first Thursday monthly Nominating committee presented directors for one two and three year terms unanimously elected Also elected were officers President Edgar C Wolters 1st VP P R Otto 2nd VP A H Kaspar 3rd VP Glade Welhausen and Treasurer Peck Welhausen.

The historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio sold recently for 265000 dollars to the National Hotel company, which operates numerous hotels in the South and Southwest. Notable guests on its registers include General Robert E. Lee, Theodore Roosevelt, and Presidents Benjamin Harrison and William Howard Taft.

Mrs. Louise Klostermann marked her 77th birthday on Sunday with friends stopping by on Monday. Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Walter Klostermann and baby from San Antonio, and several Robstown couples including Mr. and Mrs. Loren z, Hinze, Guettler and son, and Leroy and Mrs. Knetig. The Gazette extends best wishes for many more happy birthdays.
Miss Clarice Hollman of Laredo and Lieut J W Neal of Camp Wolters were brief visitors in Shiner on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mrs. Julia Green celebrated her eightieth birthday with an open house at her home last Friday attended by about sixty guests. The event featured red white and blue decor, a centerpiece of carnations, a matching cake, punch and cake, and many well wishes from friends including out of town visitors from Boling Gonzales Beaumont and Houston. Mrs Green, just recovered from pneumonia, remained cheerful and hopeful for the future as friends expressed their wishes for continued happiness.

A Sunday night blaze in Floresville destroyed the J. C. Merchant mercantile store and four neighboring shops on the square, causing about 75000 dollars in damage. San Antonio firefighters led by Chief A R Small and Captain W H Leissner aided by local crews fought the blaze for two hours. The gutted buildings housed a grocery hardware dry goods and meat market. Merchant’s store has stood 26 years and its owner is Floresville’s mayor and First City National Bank president.
