Smile It Pays and the Power of a Happy Greeting
A Corsicana Sun note extols smiling as a low cost asset that earns friends, contrasts it with grouchiness, and urges the reader to smile. It spots social payoff in daily courtesy. The item then shifts to social notes, mentioning Mrs. Ed Steves and family visiting in San Antonio. It closes with a Chicago trial scene where a plaintiff reveals he investigates for the defendant railroad and claims a fraudulent verdict.

Record Corrects Drought Year in Local Inquirer
A Gonzales Inquirer reader insists the great drought occurred in 1878 not 1879. The note recalls 1878 as severe, with neighbors banding together to feed families and looting stores for meat, followed by rain on May 14 15, 1878, and high corn yields on local lands.
