The Shiner Gazette presents the third installment of the Texas Basins Project series courtesy of the Victoria Advocate and staff writer Roy Grimes. The article appears as a five part sequence with the third story on page 4.
Howell Jones 68 native of Yoakum dies at home March 9 after major surgery. For 25 years he served as STPA secretary, rallying members and shaping the association. Also remembered for Chamber of Commerce leadership, civic and church work as founder of St. Andrew's Methodist Church. He is survived by wife, son, two daughters.
Three cases disposed of Monday morning April 20 in District Court Hallettsville before Judge W W Ellison without a jury. Frank Wayne Hickey received a two year suspended sentence after pleading guilty for breaking or entering a vehicle. Clarence Cross was sentenced to ten years to run concurrently with a sentence he is serving in state penitentiary for entering a Yoakum clinic and taking about 400 dollars. Harold Wayne Valagura got four years for theft over fifty dollars after stealing boots and a rifle from William Borchers hunting camp. State attorneys E W Patteson and A G Schwartz prosecuted all three cases.
Philip Strauch Jr. is named Cuero district manager succeeding J C Dale who has been manager since October 1961. Dale moves to forecast engineer for Southwestern Bell's new Gulf Division in Houston as Claude Matthews announces the change.
Emil A. Koranek of Moulton died April 15 1964 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Shiner after a tree accident near Moulton. He was 67 with three sons and ten grandchildren surviving. Funeral services were held April 17 at St. Joseph's Church Moulton with burial in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery.
The image features Becky Ann six, Mar sha Lynn four, and Sherry Lynn four, daughters of local families in Shiner. Becky's and Mar sha Lynn's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Cook Jr. Sherry Lynn belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Buesing.
Obituary for Mrs. John Hoepfl of Moulton died April 15 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Home aged 78. Funeral at Buffington Chapel Shiner on April 17 with Requiem Mass at Moulton Catholic Church. Buried in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include three sons and two daughters plus grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Firemen's Auxiliary asks members to contact two leaders before April 24 to join the April 28 supper. The American Legion and Auxiliary meet April 28 at 8:00 p.m. The Men's Club holds a regular meeting April 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Park. Shiner Council Catholic Nurses will attend holy communion in body on April 26 at 6:30 p.m.
Absentee voting in the May 2 primary is underway with ballots issued to requesting voters. Early voting runs from April 13 to April 28, and in person voting at the County Clerk's office requires a poll tax receipt during 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
Shiner VFW Post 6209 and Ladies Auxiliary held their regular meeting on April 9 1964. Election of officers elected for the coming term named Ewald Erdelt as Commander along with a slate including Meyer Dreyer and others. District 24 Commander Henry commended the post for its yearly record and urged similar performance elsewhere.
A list of Shiner High School students designated as candidates for graduation on May 27 1964. Postmaster General orders regional savings with May 4 1964 start. Shiner window will stay open 8 to 12 on Saturdays for other services. no money orders sold Saturdays after May 4. Rural carriers cannot accept money order applications Saturdays. Patrons urged to use weekdays and buy stamps.
The notice urges timely applications for Little League and Babe Ruth League with a May 1 deadline. Sponsors will be contacted, teams assigned, and practices may start before the season opens. Forms are available elsewhere in the issue.

Court St Paul No 1604 Catholic Daughters gathers April 27 at 7 30 PM in the Catholic Parish Gym with a Grand Regent Myrtle Brosch report and a door prize. Shiner Council Catholic Nurses meets April 30 at 7 30 PM at Frank M Wagner Memorial Hospital with Mrs Wagner showing slides from her European tour. MYF social April 26 at 7 PM at the church inviting guests. Strauss reunion May 3 in Cat Spring Texas at H A Strauss home with noon basket lunch and annual meeting.
Rev Albert R Peterson accepted invitation as guest speaker for Paige Texas Home Coming and Memorial Day Services next Sunday April 26. He delivers the home coming message at morning worship and the memorial address in the afternoon. Mrs Peterson and daughters Gloria and Carolyn accompany him.
The Junior Class of Shiner High School invites the public to attend the Junior-Senior Prom Saturday April 25 from 8 30 to 9 30 p m at the Shiner High School Gym.
Due to the absence of Rev. Albert R. Peterson next Sunday April 26 Don Kaspar Church Lay Leader will be in charge of the morning worship at 10 45 He will be assisted by other church laymen.
The 27th Annual Meeting and Open House of the Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation will be in Gonzales at Cullen Chapel. Registration starts 8:30 a.m. in the Midland Building on Sunday May 3 1964 with church services at 9 a.m. and a membership meeting at 10 a.m. Special entertainment follows and tours of the Center are available. Colonel Harlan A Hodges presides.
The sophomores of St Paul High School present a talent show titled Spaceman Views Moon Talent. It will take place Sunday April 26 at 7 30 p m in the Catholic Parish Gym with a public invitation.
