The Shiner Gazette continues a five part series on the Texas Basins Project courtesy of the Victoria Advocate. Staff writer Roy Grimes notes the second installment appears on page 4 of this issue.
The notes recount the Alexandrian Library and Pergamum rivalry with papyrus shortages leading to parchment, Mark Antony gifting scrolls to Cleopatra, and Alexandria’s vast collection. It then notes Rome’s later destruction, Arab completion of the library’s ruin, Quebec City’s bilingual library effort, and the Library of Congress forming from Jefferson’s collection after 1812.
A Social Security Office representative from Victoria Texas will be in Shiner at City Hall at 9 a.m. Monday April 20, 1964. Citizens may file retirement survivor or disability benefit claims at the session.
The Lavaca County grand jury for the spring term 1964 returned 12 indictments, all felonies, and reported on county finances and properties. Indictments include willful destruction of fences, breaking and entering vehicles, burglary, theft over 50 dollars, and assault with intent to murder. The panel praised courthouse and jail upkeep but urged safety and maintenance improvements.
Local troops plan to attend the Live Oak District Camp-O-Ree April 17 18 19 1964 at George F Kallus farm La Vaca County four miles east of Hallettsville on Highway 77. Program starts Friday check in ends with Sunrise Church Service Sunday morning. Troop 231 led by Steve Kubicek and Troop 232 led by Oscar Bisseler sponsored by Knights of Columbus and Shiner Business Men's Club. Campfire and Court of Honor Saturday night among highlights. Friends of scouting invited to attend.
Kitty McLaughlin of the Texas Education Agency conducted a routine inspection of the Shiner Public School lunch room on April 9. The facility received a good rating in all phases meeting Type A lunch standards and showing strong use of USDA donated foods, quality meals, low plate waste, and solid sanitation.
Mrs Terezie Vincik aged 92 died April 9 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Home Shiner. Requiem Mass April 11 at Shiner Catholic Church with burial in SPJST Cemetery. Survived by three daughters one daughter in law one brother nine grandchildren twenty great grandchildren three great great grandchildren.
Firemen's Auxiliary hosts an April 28 supper after prior contact by April 24 with Fran kie E Kubecka or George Valls. Knights of Columbus meet April 16 at 8:00 p.m. Parish Gym. Men’s Club holds April 23 at 7:30 p.m. Legion Park. St Joseph and St Elizabeth Societies meet April 19 at 2:00 p.m. Parish Gym. KJZT meets April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Parish gym. Bunjes Home Demonstration Club gathers April 21 at 2:00 p.m. ShinEr Home Demonstration Club meets April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Mrs Rudie Valenta’s, hostess Mrs Edwin Pfeil. Methodist Women’s Society of Christian Service luncheon April 22 at 12:30 p.m. Fellowship Hall. ShinEr Lodge No. 20 meets April 20 at 8:00 p.m. Hermann Sons Hall. The Blue Ladies meet April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Hospital Annex.
The Frank M. Wagner Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold its quarterly meeting on Thursday April 16 at 7 30 p m in the Hospital Annex. Five Blue Ladies will receive a 100-hour volunteer service patch Mrs Henry Bolech Mrs Alphonse Grill Mrs John E Kasper Mrs Jim Patek and Mrs C B Stratman are named. Discussions include Hospital Day and other matters.
Archbishop Robert E. Lucey will preside at San Fernando Cathedral on Thursday April 16 at 10 a.m. for the investiture of five archdiocesan pastors who received papal honors last December. Names include Msgrs Foegelle Maneth Martin McDonald and Nowak all serving as San Antonio pastors with roles in the ceremony and Mass.
Dismissed patients include Robert Bambace Martha Wright Adam Wendel Harold Koenning and baby girl Dennis Kaspar Edwin Pohler Cyril Dornak Julia Chalupa Emil Anders Johnnie Handl Matthew Pustka and baby boy. Readable names listed for local hospital records this week.
Shiner residents formed the Shiner Men's Softball Association on April 6 electing Elton Zander as president and Joe Roller as secretary treasurer. Men 21 and older may register with Billy Gene Goetz or at Spoetzl Brewery. registration closes May 1 with a $1 fee for equipment. The organization will meet May 4 at City Hall to select teams and begin play shortly after.
Shiner High School's one act play A Marriage Proposal directed by Max E Seidenberger finished second at the Class A Interscholastic League contest held in Smithville on April 14. Kay Lynn Wolters won best actress medal. John Williford earned all star cast honors. John Dierksen received honorable mention. Five schools competed Bastrop Moulton Smithville Schulenburg and Shiner Schulenburg won first place.
The committee selected a free attendance prize to be given away at the meeting. Lighting at the park is nearing completion and by laws require amendment. A large turnout is urged as important business will be transacted in the evening. The club has nearly paid for the dam and bridge with new park projects planned. A special fund raising project is in progress for the Game and Fish League. Hold May 7 open for this meeting.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Yoakum for E. E. Ed Macha a Yoakum business man who died April 9 after a long illness at Huth Memorial Hospital. He was 76. Burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery. He was born February 26 1888 in Moulton and survived by his wife Edith a daughter Julia Keil two sons Wilson and Joe four grandchildren plus several brothers and half brothers.
Be present for the next 4-H leadership meeting on Wednesday May 6 at 7 30 PM at Shiner Public School to learn how to become a 4-H leader.
City of Shiner will experience a power outage from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday April 19 for necessary repairs. Utilities advise residents to plan accordingly and conserve electricity during the maintenance window.
The Hospital Foundation will observe Hospital Day on Sunday May 3 announced by Ernest Petry administrator. The event features refreshments guided tours by the hospital Blue Ladies and displays of new medical equipment. Over 5000 dollars was spent last year on improvements including furnishings for four rooms partial furnishings for six rooms private restrooms and an electrosurgical unit.
Funeral services are set for 3 00 p m Wednesday April 15 1964 at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner for the premature infant son of PFC and Mrs Johnny Bennett who died in Oberammergau Germany. The baby born April 1 arrived in Victoria then Port Lavaca before final arrival in Shiner for services. Pallbearers are the infant's uncles Carroll Glover Paulie E J Jr and Robert Tasler of Point Comfort. The deceased is survived by the parents a sister Angie Louise 15 months and grandparents and great grandparents from Point Comfort Shiner Brenham and Camilla Ga.
The Dance Club hosts a spring dance on Saturday night April 18 at Legion Park. Each member couple may bring a guest couple. Music will be provided by Jurecka's Orchestra.
Decoration Day services for the Oak Hill Cemetery of Flatonia will be held Sunday April 19 at 2 o clock. In case of rain, services move to the Flatonia High School Auditorium.
