The Shiner Gazette publishes a five installment series on Texas Basins courtesy of the Victoria Advocate and staff writer Roy Grimes. The fourth story appears on page 4 of this issue.
An Oregon teen was killed when her car was struck from behind at an intersection by a drunk driver, pushed onto a highway and hit by a truck. The piece urges reducing smoking and drinking to cut cancer and highway deaths, stressing innocent victims.
Heavy storms brought 3 inches of rain to Shiner and surrounding Lavaca County with hail up to hen egg size in Koerth. Saturday totals reached 3.64 inches for observer Walter L Ladewig with damage to crops. Sunday brought light showers as the cold front moved through Yoakum Pilot Grove and Koerth.
Jerry Nathan Robinson and Phillip C. Sorrell, both of Alice, received five year terms in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to burglary. They admitted breaking into the William Borchers hunting camp and later acknowledged burglarizing a Cuero Key Service Station on February 6. Wayne Valagura, given four years probation for theft in the Borchers case, is reportedly implicated. a warrant has been issued.
The Hochheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Company held its 72nd annual convention at Legion Park on April 20 and 21 with 123 delegates, 3 auditors, and 9 grand directors present. Officers and guests from various mutuals attended, and Yoakum was invited to host next year’s meeting in April 1965.
The Hochheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Association thanks numerous local leaders and organizations at their 72nd annual convention in Shiner Texas. Gratitude is expressed to clergy, officials, bank presidents, mutuals leaders, and local volunteers for welcome words refreshments and tours.
The St. Paul High School Seniors Mothers' Club will sponsor a dance at Legion Park in Shiner on Sunday May 3. Admission is 50 cents for ladies and 1.00 for gentlemen. Music by the Moods of Luling begins at 8 30 p.m. Public invited.
The State Board reports 855 candidates passed the March 27 and 28, 1964 vocational nurse exams and received licenses. Since September 7, 1951, a total of 29,446 licenses issued. There are 135 vocational nurse training schools in Texas. Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital will hold an open house Sunday May 3. For program information contact Mrs. Helen Kosler.
A family photo caption lists seven children from Shiner with ages three to eight. Debra Kay Wrazel and Brigid Lee Miculka appear as grand-daughter and daughter of local guardians Clarence Kempe and Leon J. Mikulka respectively, along with Jay Paul Kasper and others. The grouping shows siblings and cousins from Shiner families in a front and back row arrangement.
A Social Security representative from Victoria Texas will meet residents at City Hall Shiner at 9 AM Monday May 4 1964 to help file retirement survivor or disability claims and answer program questions. Officials say the system remains in actuarial balance with trust funds totaling 21.3 billion as of 1963 and projected growth through 1968.
The Shiner Game and Fish League schedules its annual meeting for Thursday May 7 at Green-Dickson Municipal Park. A free rod and reel prize, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and electric lights are ready. a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologist will discuss algae control and fish production in tanks.
The Shiner Men’s Softball Association invites all teams to a May 4 meeting at 7 30 p m at City Hall to set summer schedules. Registrants 21 and older may register with Billy Gene Goetz at Elkins Store or Joe Roller at Spoetzl Brewery. deadline May 1.
The body of Mrs Mary Fuller was moved from Texarkana Texas where she died October 16 1962 and re interred in Schulenburg City Cemetery April 16 1964 beside her husband Dr A L Fuller. She was born in Cistern and spent early life in Fayette County later living in Texarkana for seventeen years. The couple were former Shiner residents for many years.
Lavaca County Republicans announce a county wide primary to be held Saturday May 2 with polling in Shiner at the former post office across from the SP Depot. Ballots feature governor candidates and a presidential referendum among others with multiple county and state offices listed.
Last chance for players to submit Little League and Babe Ruth applications. Deadline is Friday May 1.
Rebecca Little daughter of Superintendent and Mrs David A Little of Shiner will reign as queen at the Shiner May Fest on Sunday May 17 at the Shiner American Legion Park. She is a Shiner High School sophomore active in FHA on the girls basketball team and a SYS cheerleader. Becky will be escorted by Bobby Buske with Grand Vice President Henry Riemer and Grand Lodge officials attending the coronation.
Funeral services for 75 year old William Koch of Skidmore were conducted at 4 p.m. in the Galloway Wilson Chapel with Rev. D W Elzy officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Koch, born August 9 1888 in Lavaca County, lived in the Skidmore area most of his life and was a farmer. He married Emilie Beyer November 5 1910 at Skidmore and was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Order of Sons of Hermann. Survivors include his wife two daughters a son six sisters four brothers seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The St Pauls and St Ludmila Academy PTC will hold a Food Sale on Saturday May 9 at downtown Patek's Market starting at 9:00 AM. Items include homemade bread strudel cakes pies kolaches and noodles. Members N through Z should contribute while A through M who did not donate in February should bring items. Door prize registration available and Mother’s Day treats featured.
The Frank M. Wagner Memorial Hospital Foundation will observe Hospital Day with an Open House on Sunday May 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The event is announced in last week's Gazette and invites community members to tour the facility.
The event lists current hospital patients and dismissals, then promotes a Sunday May 3 open day featuring weather history, guided tours by the Hospital Auxiliary, and displays of recent medical equipment and room refurbishments funded by community donors. Highlights include private restrooms, water coolers, an electro-surgical unit, diathermy, patient power lift, and Bible gifts. The hospital reports over 5 000 dollars spent on improvements in the past year and more than 10 000 since opening to the community, with aims to improve care without raising patient costs.
Mrs. Marie Schiffmann, mother of Mrs. Thompson of Granby Colorado, died in St. Paul Minnesota on Tuesday March 31 after a fall. She was 88 years old and burial occurred at Fairfax. Locals recall she visited Shiner several winters with relatives and friends.
Lavaca County voting centers on May 2 for Democratic primaries. Sheriff race features William O. Renger Ronnie Dodds and Guy Henry. State representative race includes J. T. Terry Newman and A. L. Gus Thomas. Commissioner's race for Yoakum Shiner Precinct 3 has six candidates. Additional unopposed filings include Paul C. Boether Willis Ellison E W Patteson Frances Polasek James Evans Robert Pesek Hollie Hamman Erwin Kasper Albert McElroy Daniel Koranek Eddie Chudej Richard Cervenka Hilmer Woytek. Henry Seidenberger announced the annual Sulphur Park Swimming Pool opening for Sunday May 10. Barbecue items and trimmed treats will be sold from 11:30 a.m. and available for dine in or take home. Refreshments and daytime and nighttime entertainment, including a free dance headlined by The Quintettes, greet visitors to Sulphur Park. Coral snake bites are noted as fatal in about twenty percent of cases.
Registration for first grade at St Ludmila's Academy will be held after Masses on Sunday May 3 10 and 17. Parents may register during weekdays if Sunday is not possible. A Baptism certificate is required. Children must have smallpox vaccination and boosters every five years. A medical exam and basic immunizations for cough diphtheria typhoid polio are advised.
