Businesses will close on Good Friday April 11 from noon to 3 pm and on April 14 Easter Monday as a chamber holiday. All stores also close Saturday night April 12 with no shopping until Tuesday April 15 due to Sunday and Monday closures.
C J Slovacek Sr died at the family home on Route 1 Shiner Monday April 7 at 12 50 PM aged 72 years 4 months 26 days Funeral services were held from Buffington Funeral Home Shiner to Sweet Home Catholic Church for Requiem High Mass burial in Sweet Home Catholic Cemetery Pallbearers included Bill Siegel Oscar Kasparek Ludwig Zapalac John Tesar Henry Zissa and Johnny Janak Rosary was recited at the funeral home April 8 Body remained in state until rites He was born Ellinger Fayette County November 11 1879 Married Mary Heidaker in Shiner in 1901 Survived by wife three daughters three sons twelve grandchildren one great grandchild five sisters two brothers and numerous relatives He was faithful to his church and a loyal neighbor expressed sympathy from many.
This week’s hospital listing shows patients including Mrs. Mike Benes Sr. and Mrs. Annie Mewes among others in Shiner and Flatonia. Dismissed patients include Mrs. Alfred Seifert and Angeline Winkenwerder along with several others and babies. notable names include Mrs. Eugene B. Krejci and baby boy and Mrs. Parker Beal.
J. M. Canon mourns the death of his sister Mrs. Elbea Gibson at Popular Creek Mississippi last week The Gazette extends heartfelt sympathy to Mr Canon from many friends.
Lavaca District Boy Scouts of America schedules the Skillet Billet Camporee at Rothschmidt Hobbs Ranches near Hallettsville. Troop 222 Hallettsville leads the event with activities including camping cooking judging, patrol meals, signaling knots and compass contests. Registration begins 1:00 PM April 19 followed by dinner at 6:00 PM and campfire at 8:00 PM with awards to top campers and patrols.
Decoration Day will be observed Sunday in the Shiner City Cemetery with no formal program. Graves will be decorated throughout the day and free will offering boxes will be placed at cemetery entrances.
About one hundred boys have registered for the Teen-age and Junior league in Shiner. A mass meeting of sponsors managers players and dads is called for Tuesday April 15 at 7 30 PM in Shiner High School auditorium to review the new constitution and by laws. Boys nine through seventeen as of April 15 1952 should sign up at Zander's Service Station or at the high school. Separate Little League nine to thirteen and Junior League fourteen to seventeen divisions exist. Umpires are invited to attend and Jerry Havel is the official scorer. Don’t forget the meeting at the High School gym.
Decoration Day services are planned for Sunday April 27 in Weimar, a day tied to homecoming traditions. Arrangements for the program remain incomplete. Milton Roeder, on a 16 day leave, visits his parents Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Roeder, after a trip to Austin with the Roeder and Kram families.
John Louis Bolech 75 died after a long life farming near Shiner and Yoakum. Graveside services were held at Catholic Cemetery Shiner after funeral at Buffington Chapel Yoakum and church services at St Joseph's. Survived by wife four sons three daughters numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Kokernot Grove will be operated by Martin Baros and Albert Duhe. Their opening dance is set for Wednesday April 16 with Edwin Kusak and His Tunetwisters providing music. Admission to the first dance is free for dancing fans.
St. Ludmila’s P T A plans field day travel from Hallettsville and grade chaperones for school picnics. The senior play Here Comes Charlie is scheduled for Tuesday April 29 at the Catholic gym. Ray Gunn from Detroit visited local families and recalls WWII service with Max L. Wolters and Felix Hubner.
The life of Theodore Malcom Siebenhausen ended after an accidental gunshot wound at his home on Sunday afternoon. The Shiner youth, born in Dallas on September 8, 1936, attended St. Ludmila's Academy and was a Star Scout near Life Scout rank. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Anna Krpec Siebenhausen, sister Rose Marie, and numerous relatives. services were held at Shiner Catholic Church with a Roeder Funeral Home wake.
Saturday’s school trustee election in Shiner ISD drew 283 votes. Incumbent Wilbur Minear won 209, R H Sterling 185, Jerry B Havel 115, with 1 complimentary vote for Johnnie E Kasper. Basil Bell led newcomers Pete Kahane k and Otto Remmers.
Congratulations to several families on new arrivals. Jean Frances Elmore was born April 1 at Nightingale Memorial Hospital to Florine Dolezal and James T. Elmore of Del Rio. Cynthia Ann and Christopher James Macha were born March 25 in Ocean Park, California. David Anthony Williamson, weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces, was born March 29 in Wagner Hospital to Carolyn Ogston Williamson. Albert F Roznovsky reports a baby boy born April 3 at the local hospital, weight 8 pounds.
The Baptist Revival ended Sunday night with five additions to the church by baptism. Mrs. Johnny Turk and Miss Frieda Hillen arrived by letter from Dreyer, Sarah Jo Ann Turk, Kay Allert and Letha Pohler were baptized. Dr. Valentine of Gonzales offered inspirational messages and Rev. and Mrs. Wm. Hines of Fort Worth led singing. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Breitkreutz with son and Arthur Ward and William Garbade helped with special numbers.
O. A. Kosler was re-elected county trustee in Shiner Precinct 3 with 254 votes. A. J. Kallus won re-election at large with 238 votes. Wm. Gerum received one complimentary write-in.
Prolonged illness claimed Mrs. Thomas Annie Hubka Sr age 78 at her Shiner home. Funeral at Shiner Catholic Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery. She was born June 13 1873 in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1890. Survived by husband three daughters two sons, 23 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
The Shiner Business Men's Club meets tonight at 7 30 PM at Post Cafe. The Shiner High School Band concert is set for May 1 with admission 35c and 15c. Girl Scouts Troops 2 and 3 run a spring paper drive on April 18 and 25 with porch pickup. call 235 1 for large loads or deliver to the old Catholic Parish Hall. Altar Society plans a meeting and social on Tuesday April 15 at 3 PM in the Catholic Gym.
Mrs. C. J. Waldrep reports the Red Cross drive collection totaled 789.21, sent to County headquarters. The town of Shiner did not reach the 1000 quota, and Waldrep credits helpers, especially the ladies, for their unselfish efforts and appreciation.
