Noblesville Indiana June 21 1917 the Board of Review nears completion with about ten days left to finish assessing corporations and banks after three weeks of reviewing township reports and mortgage exemptions. The board aims to be lenient yet fair amid unsettled national conditions.
Forty five lots were sold at Public Auction Saturday afternoon in the new Hoffman addition at an average of 60 dollars. Twenty people bought the set at prices from 40 to 380 dollars each. John N. Akers of Hardin Kentucky conducted the sale but did not realize a profit. The "kid" band of Frankfort provided music with Cols. Iglehart and Miller on the block. Lon Cooper received the free lot as cash prizes were awarded. The new eight acre addition lies along the cement road and the old Lafayette road southeast of town. Purchasers included G. W. Osborn J. Henry Miller known as Hank, aged 70, died Tuesday at the Soldiers Home in Marion. He had lived in Sheridan twenty years, staying with sister Mrs. Mary Jennings on California Street. A Civil War veteran of Company E 152nd Indiana Infantry, he spent twenty three years fishing each summer and was buried at the Home Cemetery in Marion Wednesday afternoon.
A large crowd attended Sunday joint memorial services at Crown View cemetery with the Sheridan band leading a procession from the Red Men hall on Main Street. Hon. John E. Sedwick of Martinsville spoke boldly about patriotism and civic virtue, praised as an eminent orator.
Land transfers in Jackson, Cicero, Westfield, Sheridan and other townships with prices listed. New cases filed include Minnie Dawson v Dawson for divorce and Fernand McKinstray v William Thompson et al to quiet title. Continued on page 3.
Sullivan Wisconsin dairy producer Wm Bloomenstien visits the local condenser and notes big producers will build more silos this year to cut feed costs. Silage feeds year round in the area yield savings over pasture costs and he expects milk prices to rise next winter and spring.
The Town Board decided Monday night to brick the north south alley from Cora avenue to Fourth street after sewer work disrupted traffic to the bakery Golden Rule and nearby businesses. Under Barrett law the project proceeds as Sheridan’s first such improvement in two years. The marshal was told to enforce speed limits and headlights, and a new statute this month bans old time lights.
The Sheridan News announces a price rise to 1.25 a year effective September 3. Subscribers may renew at the old 1.00 rate before that date, with all current subscriptions stopping at the end of the paid period.
Frank Spencer of Murray Nebraska on way to Norfolk naval station with prior service on the border and in the Nebraska state guards. Vincent Woods sold twelve Liberty Bonds totaling 4600 dollars earning government medals. Ray Cox, Carmel draughtsman, among 75 U. S. men chosen to study aviation in France. Company I of Tipton accepted by government with inspection on June 4. Captain Mount leads Tipton county crew.
At least eight rural routes in Hamilton County will be dropped under new orders effective July first. Sheridan, Hortonville, Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel, Atlanta, and Arcadia lose routes with carriers named T. J. Dean Bernie Rodgers and others. Sheridan routes shift to standard thirty mile lines numbered 1 2 5 4 5 6. Hortonville will be served from Sheridan and Westfield. Oldest carrier T. J. Dean began April 15 1901 on a 2334 mile route serving 685 people.
Sheridan hosts a full day of fun on July 4 with DeVore Honey Boy Minstrels, a merry go round, baby show, trap shooting, foot races, pony show, nail driving, fat man’s race, slow auto race and two band concerts. A nighttime pageant ends with a patriotic fire flag display at Compton’s Park lit by electricity.
A special entertainment event is planned for Saturday June 30 with the Indianapolis Newsboy Band arriving at 1 PM and performing three concerts through 10 PM. Local business leaders are funding the visit.
Boone county Threshers Association approved higher threshing costs for the year due to increased compensation insurance demands and rising labor costs. A similar threshermen meeting is scheduled for Tipton Saturday morning.
Theodore Allis age 66 lifelong Cicero resident died by his own action in his barn early Sunday. Poor health believed to have caused the act. His wife found him still warm, suspended from a beam. Coroner Baldwin attended. Survived by his second wife. Funeral held Tuesday afternoon.
Hamilton County aims to raise eleven thousand dollars with Adams township contributing about thirteen hundred. Teams will canvass next Tuesday in voting precincts to solicit one dollar memberships and special donations as local citizens prepare to support the war effort. Judge Vestal presided at Noblesville meeting of patriotic citizens as county aims to place the home chapter on a strong footing.
The American National Red Cross offers an Elementary Home Care of The Sick course taught by Mary E. Lewis R N enrollments close next week. Any woman over 16 may join with no government service obligation. Mrs Keifer Elliott leads class No 2 contact Miss Lewis to arrange textbooks and start date.
A Friday afternoon meeting in the library basement discussed food conservation. Attendance was modest but discussions were strong. A six lady committee was formed for the coming year: Pres. P. S. Johnson, Anna B. Martin, J. E. Ramsey, A. A. Stahl, L. M. Burton, and Neva Stephenson.
Potatoes planted days before the heavy rain on Saturday June 9 show seed rot in the ground. Growers report widespread rot and expect many patches to require replanting in the area.
