Village of Shep herd contracted crews began trimming trees along main streets last week. Piles of brush formed as the season's first snow fell, but the work brightened the town. Crews moved to side streets and residents praised the refreshed, well kept appearance of the village trees.
Laurel Reynolds presents the Audubon Screen Tour in Central Michigan University Auditorium on Monday November 21 at 730 p m. The color film retraces explorer journeys of Columbus Ponce de Leon Cabrillo and Bering highlighting places and wildlife in the hemisphere. Mindy Willis and Reynolds filmed on site to rediscover wonders of the New World.
Reginald Emmert a 17 year old Owosso High School senior will address the Shepherd Rotary Club next Tuesday November 22. He will show photos from the 1959 Boy Scout Jamboree in the Philippine Islands and from a world tour with five scouters. Emmert was named Outstanding Scout of the Year by Tall Pine Council and invites Boy Scouts parents and the public to attend at 7 p m in the Methodist Church.
Adult season tickets for Shepherd High School basketball games are now available at Gould's Drug Store and Wilberdings Barbershop or from the high school principal's office. Price is five dollars. Buy now to avoid the ticket line.
The C R O P Campaign is going smoothly with four townships giving 600 dollars. People away when canvassers called may turn their donations into Shepherd State Bank. If you have not given, contribute this week for the worthy cause.
The Isabella County Chapter of the American Red Cross announced upcoming classes titled Teaching the Physically Handicapped. Details and scheduling appear on page 3.
Wheat oats corn rye and soy beans led the Shepherd Farm Produce market report with listed prices for futures and cash sales. Navy beans and barley appear with smaller demand, reflecting seasonal harvest movements and regional buyer interest.
William J. Langeland was appointed Manager for Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd in the General Telephone Company, replacing D. E. Hurrell who becomes Owosso Manager. A 19 year veteran from Muskegon, Langeland comes from Commercial Survey Engineer in Muskegon general offices. He begins duties November 10 and will move his family soon.
The 1960 Catholic Bishops Thanksgiving Week Clothing Collection runs November 20 to 27, marking the twelfth year of the appeal. All local Catholic churches participate in gathering wearable clothing, shoes, blankets and bedding for those in need during Thanksgiving week.
The Shepherd State Bank announced checks totaling 17627.75 had been mailed to over 220 Christmas Club members. Cashier F J Cauchon said membership is growing and that 1961 clubs are now being formed for new joiners.
Postmaster General Summerfield announces rapid expansion of modernized facilities since 1953. Kenneth Walker cites 1,602 new buildings planned for 1960 and a total cost around 100 million dollars, with Michigan accounting for 364 new offices since 1953.
