Wheat Harvest Nears Finish at Local Elevators

Wheat began arriving at Shep herd elevators late last week as the harvest ramped up by Friday. The year shows a better than 50 bushel per acre average with many plots near 75 bushels. About 70 carloads arrived locally with potential for 100 as final loads come in. Prices slid to 1.26 from 1.62 last year amid weather and quality slipping from very good early conditions.

Higgins files petitions for GOP gubernatorial bid

George N. Higgins, Ferndale auto dealer and former state senator, filed petitions for governor with about 20 000 signatures, far meeting the requirement, to challenge Governor Romney in the September 1 Republican primary. Higgins carried petition boxes, wore a Goldwater hat, and pledged support for the party and its nominee.

Reception for New Pastor at Shepherd Methodist Church

Shepherd Public School officials announce the local chapter will receive the Silver Award to be presented to Ag Teacher Paul Simon during the dinner session at the annual vocational Agriculture teachers conference on Monday July 27 at Michigan State University Kellogg Center. The award honors the 1963 64 Chapter Supervised Farming Program winners.

Boyd Durfee of Durand arrives in Shephard on Friday noon en route to the Mt Pleasant Centennial. The former Mt Pleasant resident born and raised there, married to Caroline Beverline, says he rode about 17 miles per gallon and plans a further visit before the final push to the Centennial.

Health educator Kent Gray joins Central Michigan District staff

E. J. Brenner M D director of the Central Michigan District Health Department announces Kent L. Gray has been appointed health educator at the Isabella County Office. Gray, a 1961 CMU graduate with BS and MA in Health and Physical Education, will work with Dr Elizabeth Wheeler on a demonstration program in Health Education funded by a grant from the Michigan Maternal and Child Health Division.
