Editorial voices nationwide mark National Newspaper Week noting the free press as a pillar of liberty. The piece argues freedom thrives when papers foster better housing sanitation schools and informed citizenry supporting strong local communities and government.
City officials in Shafter prepared streets for the rainy season with ongoing improvements. Frank Shaw reports a county ripper borrowed for a day helped smooth Lerdo Highway, improving drainage and condition. The city awaits its own ripper on order to keep all streets in good repair for winter rains.
Shafter's Town Hall forum series begins October 14 at the Richland School Cafeteria. Dr. Howard J. McMurray of Occidental College will lead the program, joining speakers from Los Angeles radio forums. The series is funded by local schools, the city, and the community chest with no admission.
Weekend arrests in Shafter involve Edward Wiles and Petrin Gonzales for driving while intoxicated with $300 fines and 180 day suspended sentences. Carmel Siranis pays $25 for intoxication and disturbing the peace, Henry Oliver Jr. released on $50 bail. Bernie Walker cited for intoxication disturbing the peace and displaying firearms with $100 fine and 90 day suspended sentence.
Annual field day at the U S Cotton Field Station Shafter sponsored by California Planting Cotton Seed Distributors with USDA attracted about 80 representatives from cooperating cotton companies oil mills gins and growers. Hailed new 4-42 Acala cotton seed promising strong fibre with fewer neps and defoliation trials for mechanical pickers.
City Judge Frank Shaw urged Shafter voters to approve a two proposition bond issue for enlarging the sewage disposal plant and increasing water supply. He warned failure would halt growth, risk removal of areas from the city, and threaten public health due to over loaded facilities. He urged at least 70 percent turnout and noted many civic-minded residents have not registered.
Exeter lightweights prove superior as they shutout Shafter Colonels 26 to 0. Despite a strong Colonels defense, Exeter dominated with a hard-charging line and timely scoring. The Bees failed to breach the Exeter front and resorted to passing late in the game.
A short note highlights Luscious donuts from Joe's Speges Bakery, described as sweet and fragrant in advertisement style.
A meeting of Shafter and Wasco bowlers will be held at 7 p.m. in the Assembly room of Shafter City Hall to elect officers and set rules for the coming winter leagues. The Shafter Bowling Alley reopened Saturday and will be open noon to midnight daily except Fridays, with two league formats planned and rotating playing times to include both early and late sessions. Les Reeves will manage the alleys, assisted by Jerry Unruh, with owner Bob Neuman overseeing the facility behind Neuman's Cafe.
Al Baird and Jack Hinsley take over the Smith Corner service station formerly run by Bayless and Son. They offer Signal Gasoline and motor oils, a full line of batteries tires and accessories, plus an on site garage with Luther Le Compte as mechanic.
Between meal snacks promoted from Joe's Topper Bakery, highlighting coffee cakes as a bakery favorite.
Shafter High Generals defeated Exeter Monarchs 25-6 on their home field before about 900 fans. Bob Scales directed the offense with sharp passing while Wayne Hill and Tom Fletcher contributed powerful runs to fuel a 65 yard drive and three Shafter touchdowns. The Monarchs managed a second quarter score on a Christ quarterback sneak, but the stubborn Shafter line held firm the rest of the game.
Pat Kelly District Governor and former 20 30 member spoke on the Rotary ties to the 20 30 while endorsing expansion plans. The group announced fire prevention contests at Shafter High School Richland Rio Bravo and Maple schools with essay and poster divisions. Contests run during National Fire Prevention Week in early October.
Happy birthday wishes are noted for Mrs. Harvey Neuman and others with birthdays Sept. 30 through Oct. 6. Figures include Joe Westbrook Georgette Kadel Mary Weitz Lydia Mayer Mrs W S Harper and several more residents.
Preliminary drawings for Shafter High School cafeteria approved by Kern County Union High School District. Wright Metcalf and Parsons authorized to proceed with working drawings to allow future expansion and current enrollment needs.
