Arvin took first place in the county fair among community entries for a miniature ranch exhibit showing rows of growing crops and true irrigation. The piece lauds Arvin scenery yet notes the town’s plain buildings and urges landscaping and paint to improve local beauty.
Services for John L. Sullivan were held last Tuesday at 2 30 p m Reverend B E Andrews officiating Sullivan died September 4 at Kern General Hospital at age 69 Born in Waco Texas December 12 1877 he came to California 39 years ago and lived in Shafter 34 years Burial took place at Shafter Cemetery
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce sponsors a first run Premier screening at Shafter Theatre to raise funds for Christmas decorations. The 20 30 Club will handle decorating labor, assisting in making Shafter brighter. Tickets are available at McClure Drug Store Stringham's Drug Store and The Shafter Press.
The Shafter Press invites nominations for a subscription contest ending November 22. Prizes include a Hiawatha Doodle Bug motor scooter or 150 dollars in merchandise, plus 50 25 15 and 10 dollar merchandise prizes. A 10 percent cash commission applies for non winning entrants.
Ray Rose a Shafter Kiwanis member earned a life pass to all home Shafter High School games by selling 123 season football tickets in a contest run by the student executive council. Mayor Joe Frizzell was runner up with 61 tickets sold and prizes awarded to top sellers.
Ralph Cunningham plans to build a cottage on the 500 block of California Avenue at a total cost of $6,000 with construction expected to start immediately.
Dr. John H. Revell thanks individuals and firms for aiding the Shafter county fair booth. Contributors include Al Ingraham lumber supplier, Coberly-West cotton cover walls, Shafter Maintenance and Paint sign work, Em H. Mettler potatoes, Bill and John Dalke plus Vannatta brothers for construction, Central Hardware supplies, Frank Russell Blacksmith wiring, Schneider and Wikoff lighting, Jack Thompson trucking, Pat Kelly insurance, potato growers for sacks, Bob Youell Sheet Metal aluminum, Johnny's Hobby Shop plane, Valley Air Conditioning cooler, Kern County Chamber plastic spuds, Shafter Fire Chief McClure equipment, Shafter News Agency coverings. The Richland P.T.A plans a barbecue for October 16 to support the welfare fund helping needy children with glasses lunches and aid. Rolf Jacobsen donates beef and Jack Battaglia and team will again lead the barbecue effort. P.T.A president Mrs David Jones asks members to call and volunteer and tickets go on sale today.
The Wasco City Council voted unanimously to remove all slot machines from Wasco locations by midnight October 15 following a statement by the Wasco Ministerial Union. Reverend Davis of the Wasco First Baptist Church presented the measure citing gambling laws and urging immediate action.
Delegates attending the American Legion State Convention in Los Angeles returned home last week noting a mix of business and pleasure. The gathering included serious debate on issues facing the Legion and the world. General Mark Clark addressed the assembly at Shrine Auditorium detailing tensions between Russia and the United States.
The Future Farmers of America at Kern County Fair earned 114 prizes including 6 Champions and 1 reserve Champion, with $1,450 in prize money and $7,000 stock sold yielding $3,000 over costs. Glenn Nay, Hansen, and Dooley led student entrants while names like Marvin Kirschernann, Jack Janzen, Al bert S. Goode, Steve Rodriguez, Bill Sharp, Leland Kroeker, Bill Leonard, Jess Mouser, DeWayne Neufeld, Tom Fletcher, Aubrey Galbraith, Phil Zachary, James Mathis, Donald Zachary, and Kenneth Cooper appear in results.
Ralph Kreiser chief editorial writer for the Californian spoke to the Shafter Kiwanis about democracy and press freedom stressing freedom of speech religion assembly and redress of grievances. He noted the press aids informed citizens and underpins other freedoms as newspapers and radio disseminate information.
Janice Marie Harris, a 3 year old girl from Shafter, died after catching her dress on fire while playing with matches. She received first aid at Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary and was transported to Kern General Hospital where she passed away about two hours after arrival. She was born November 17, 1944 in Shafter and is survived by her parents Cecil and (Mrs. Harris) and two brothers Roger Dale and Harold Ray Harris. Services were held October 1 at Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary with Rev. B. E. Andrews officiating.
L. J. Kirschenmann, formerly ill and confined in San Joaquin Hospital for weeks, was brought home to Shafter this week and is considerably improved in health.
