Shafter Exeter clash opens the grid season as Shafter displays a standout fair booth awarded fourth in community exhibits. The entry showcases atomic age innovation and attracts attention with crispy French Fried potatoes while promoting Shafter as a potato and cotton hub in the San Joaquin Valley.
Shafter Generals host Exeter High Monarchs in the season opener. Coach Dan Bledsoe and Dusty Rhoads emphasize hard scrimmage and strong defense to repeat last year’s 19 13 victory. Backfield threats Tom Fletcher Bob Scales Wayne Hill and Arthur Paloma pace the attack.
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District adopted a resolution to retain the Reclamation Law of 1902 limiting water rights to 160 acres per owner. The board prepared the document for a Congressional Sub Committee on public lands in Bakersfield, but the hearing was postponed. The resolution cites that democracy benefits from broad individual ownership and was signed by Clarence Annin president and four others.
The Shafter Colonels travel to face Exeter tonight at 6 pm in the season opener. Coach Ed Schacht shuffled positions with Jesse Crain moved to end and Paul Cato taking the end spot, while Fred Houston leaves tackle for Tidwell as the team aims to rebound after last year's 38–0 defeat.
City Council and Utility Board approve a city garbage survey to run through the month and adopt downtown 1 hour parking. The plan rewords signs and enforces parking limits while restoring a prior one hour limit in shopping areas.
Shafter High School announces night classes for adults with a typing course led by Tom Letizia and a recreation class directed by Lowell Todd. First sessions are Tuesday Sept 30 from 7 to 9 pm, with classes meeting twice weekly. Registration remains open at the school office and by phone. The program requires at least 15 regular attendees to continue and has no fees.
Shafter's Cub Scout pack invites parents and interested boys aged 9 to 12 to a monthly gathering at the Richland school cafeteria. The 7 p.m. session, led by Ed Brown in Benny Goosen's absence, offers introductions and joining info for new Scouts.
Bakersfield and Shafter police officers honored by the Kiwanis club for pursuing and capturing two men who robbed the Fox theatre. Chief Horace V Grayson lauded officers and noted traffic risks. Martin Baird wounded but continued the chase. Prizes awarded to participants. attendance prize won by Phil Horwith.
A girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Jake Bergén on September 24 at Freise Maternity Home Bakersfield weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces. An 8 pound baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hildebrand on September 21 at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield. A baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Winn Condren on September 24 at Cottage Hospital Oildale with weight undisclosed.
Forty miles of the Central Valley Highway are being improved this week at a total cost of 500000. The upgrade was announced at a Central Valley Highway Association meeting in Bakersfield. Charles Chambers of Hanford became president, succeeding Paul Newell of Shafter. Officers will confer with Kern County Supervisors on the Shafter to Bakersfield section. Attendees from Shafter included Mr and Mrs Al Mortimore Ray Dirksen and Mr and Mrs Paul Newell.
Tickets remain for the big premiere at Shafter Theatre on Monday October 6 to aid the Christmas decoration fund. Ernest Panero donates the theatre and film. proceeds support Shafter Christmas garb. Tickets available at Shafter Press McClure's Drug Store and Stringham's Drug Store. The 20 30 Club will handle the decorating work as usual.
Shafter’s colorful Community division display placed fourth at the Kern County Fair and Livestock Show, missing third by one point. The booth drew crowds all day, featuring Shafter potatoes and was conceived by Dr. J H Revell who led a Chamber of Commerce team. Magunden was third. Tehachapi fourth. Arvin won top honors with 95 points.
Shafter's FFA chapter dominated the Kern County Fair beef cattle judging with 32 first place honors. DeWayne Neufeld won lightweight class first with a 700 to 850 pound steer, while middleweight entrants earned second and third for Shafter FFA. Jack Janzen captured first and second in heavyweight with his steer named reserve champion among FFA entries.
