Town hall session set for tomorrow at 7 p m invites public to attend and learn about local safety progress. Staff will seek volunteers to aid improvements while residents express concerns and gain information. Previous town halls in Shafter drew large, informative crowds.
Garry Nelson seeks a third term as mayor in Shafter highlighting health and safety, economic well being as top priorities. He has served two terms on the city council and four years as mayor, is 49, and has resided in Shafter for 25 years.
Nelson, a Shafter Rotary Club member and Memorial Hospital Foundation board representative, advocates youth after school programs and weekend activities to improve community life. He emphasizes planning that prioritizes health, safety, and economic well being.
Margaret Baker reports the Carroll chamber board favored a Fair theme despite optional usage. A 45 minute discussion led to Ronda Martin proposing the idea in two minutes. Local businesses and farmers supplied items for an exhibit as lights illuminate displays and a welcome sign greets visitors with the line Who says life isn't fair.
On September 20, 2000, Brevi was attempting a U turn on Lerdo Highway east of Beech Street when struck by a Peterbuilt tanker carrying diesel fuel. Linda Bynum's daughter had minor injuries and was treated at Mercy Hospital. dust obscured visibility as crews cleaned spill sites. The Shafter Police Department investigates the crash.
