SHafter High School pursues growth as year opens
SHS in Kern High School District enters 1991 92 with enrollment target 1200 by mid October. Since opening in 1928 with 54 students the school has expanded to 58 teachers, 52 classified staff, and about 250 expected graduates this year. Principal Herb Neufeld notes funding cuts constrain hires and space. Two portable classrooms added. eight new rooms planned for 1992 93 to handle growth. SHS earned six year accreditation after a year long self study and reports the lowest KHSD dropout rate, aided by a retention program and active extracurriculars.

Cotton farming tour and meeting held near Shafter
The California Planting Cotton Seed Distributors held its 55th annual meeting and field day tour at the Research and Development Station near Shafter on Sept. 17. About 300 cotton farmers ginners merchants and research members attended 10 a.m. to 2 30 p.m. CPCSD manager Tom Cherry said the day focused on new cotton variety development. Dr. Steve Oakley discussed experimental cottons and the high performance of newly released varieties including Maxxa and Royale acula this year. Dr. Dick Garber reported on nematode and seedling disease experiments as pests and diseases continue to threaten San Joaquin Valley cotton producers.

Hearing set in death of Shafter teen Rollins
A fitness hearing date was set in the murder case of Offord Rollins. He was moved from Lerdo Jail to Juvenile Hall after Judge Kenneth Twisselman II denied release to home detention. Rollins’ attorney, Timothy Lemucchi, argued for education and stability, citing community support and the defendant’s supposed college potential. Prosecution warned against releasing him given the seriousness of the crime.
