Shafter pool project nears approval for youth facility
The Shafter Recreation and Parks District wins a federal grant of 299,681 for pool renovations, part of a 807,337 complex overhaul. Plans call for two child pools and a 75 by 50 adult pool with a diving L, replacing one pool, and switching to liquid chlorine. Construction could begin January 1992 with a six month build, aiming for a next summer opening for local youths.

Wasco murder suspect set for fitness hearing
A hearing is planned Friday morning in Kern County Juvenile Court to schedule a fitness hearing for 17 year old Offord Rollins charged with the murder of Maria Rodriguez near Lost Hills. Rollins pled not guilty September 4 in Municipal Court, and his attorney seeks Juvenile Court to avoid potential life imprisonment. The case features community supporters and a reward fund now totaling 2000 dollars for information leading to another suspect.

Cotton Field Day showcases new cotton varieties and drip irrigation
The annual Cotton Field Day and Tour on September 12 at the USDA Cotton Research Station in Shafter drew about 165 visitors, with 11 stops where USDA and UC scientists explained experiments on cotton and drip irrigation.
