New Touch Voting Machines Ready for March Primary
Kern County Elections presented Shafter officials and the public with demonstrations of new touch voting machines that use a card slot. The system may replace paper ballots for the March 2004 primary, while recalls would still use punched cards. County costs include 250000 per election for punch cards and 5 million for new equipment, with federal matching funds forecast to recoup costs in seven elections. The planned October 7 recall has cost about 650000 so far, and postponement was discussed.

Toddler dies after neighbor vehicle collision in Bakersfield
A two year old boy was struck by a neighbor’s vehicle at 416 Gibson Lane and Shafter, near Bakersfield, as he pulled into a driveway. Police and Hall’s Ambulance responded, the child was taken to Kern Medical Center but died from injuries. vehicle towed for inspection, investigation ongoing.
