Shafter residents gathered for an A to Z in 2003 sweepstakes at Kern Fab, inspiring a show of city achievements and growth. Entertainer Randy Toews performed It Must Be Magic as fairgoers were invited to notice how Shafter has pulled together to prosper.
Folklorico dancing will be offered for 4 to 6 year olds at Redwood Elementary School cafeteria on Thursdays at 6 p.m. Regular classes for groups 1, 7 and advanced meet Monday evenings at 6 p.m. The Wasco Shafter Elk Ladies chair a lunch event at Blocks Lodge with Rusty Shoop of TV 29. The annual Dog Daze Run at Minter Field raises funds, with registration opening at 7 a.m. The Band Review features Richland Junior High and other Central Valley middle schools, gathering at Manne Park in the morning, sponsored by the Shafter Kiwanis Club.
Lyle and Nancy Carter guide 45 visitors from Germany and Japan in a Shafter tour themed Farm and Small Town America. They will visit Cotton Research Station with guide Lyle Carter, view almond, grape and pistachio production, then walk Main Street to Floyd's mural and Manne Park for lunch with Apple Market providing a meal.
Kiwanis members from Os Ocean TN and local clergy participated as six officers were listed led by Mervin Kirschenmann and Rod Becker with years noted for Wheeler and others. Directors named: Larry Chuff and George Larson. The Shafter Press invites more clubs to share activities and calls for reporters to cover events.
Voters are urged to check their sample ballot mailed to them to locate the correct polling place as many sites will differ. The recall election may not occur at usual locations, so voters should use the address and precinct on the mailing label to vote and bring the sample ballot to save time.
A group of students from Shafter High School and Central Valley High School were arrested after an early morning incident near SHS involving trespass and possession of marijuana. Adam Garcia 18 Ricky Espinoza 18 Trista Buerkie 18 were cited for trespass with additional charges. Joel Munoz 19 faced possession charges. All juveniles were released to parents awaiting probation action. School officials will take further action.
