Contamination cleanup dispute over Brown and Bryant facility
In 1985 DHS ordered cleanup at the Brown and Bryant site. A treatment system used settling tanks and filtration to remove pesticides before discharging treated water to the city sewer. An EPA settlement of 3.26 million was offered via the insurer, but DOJ objected citing liability release. City Council backed the deal in 1991 amid concerns over progress. Santa Fe Railway may route wash water into the sewer. officials consider accepting slightly higher contaminant levels if health risks are absent. The plant closed in December 1988 due to unsafe chemical storage.
