Lerdo Facility deemed unfit to house inmates

Labor Day multi agency checkpoints a success
More than 50 officers from 14 Kern County agencies joined the Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force for Labor Day patrols in northern and eastern Kern. The effort resulted in 13 DUI arrests, two felonies, nine misdemeanor drug or weapon arrests, 62 citations, and 22 vehicles impounded. Planned enforcement includes Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with public awareness campaigns funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Shafter Council Honors 06 Junior Miss Candidates
Four of nine nominees for the 2006 Shafter Junior Miss title were recognized by the City Council in March. Laura Hackett, the 2006 Junior Miss, was praised for representing Shafter at the state competition in August. Leticia Bustos received special recognition for saving a one-year-old from choking. The council continues hearings on Tentative Tract 6437 landscape and lighting district, set to fund street lighting and plant maintenance with assessments on December tax bills, and extends public hearings on selling city land to CDA funds and vacation of Verdugo Lane to September 19.

Full Throttle For Kids Draws Local Car and Bike Crowd
About a hundred motorcycles and antique cars gathered at Teen Challenge Men’s Ranch in Shafter for the first annual Full Throttle For Kids. Riders began with a 50 mile poker run from the Women’s Facility, then parked on the grounds for displays including 1920s era autos and a large helicopter by SRT Helicopters.
