Kern County Self-Help Enterprises announced that 10 local families in Shafter have formed a group and applied to Farmers Home Administration for loans. Plans call for seven homes in Mexican Colony, one at Smith's Corner, and two in Shafter, with nine more families applying in Mc Farland and new groups in Buttonwillow and Weedpatch.

The 41st Kern County Fair at the 160 acre fairgrounds opens Friday at 3 pm for a nine day run drawing an estimated 300000 visitors. Thousands of exhibits compete for over 59000 in cash premiums with highlights including the U S Army Field Band Up With People Sing Out Kern County and the National Old Fiddler's Contest for a $1000 top prize. Richland School Board Considers New Engineering Report
The Richland School Board will review a new engineering report on the music building to determine if it can be used after earthquake damage. The board noted any interpretation of statutes may allow reinstatement and will seek county counsel input. Dr. David Cooke reported a drop of about 100 in average daily attendance from last year. The board also heard about a pre kindergarten program at the North Shafter Labor Camp with about 50 children. They postponed a decision on an outdoor education program for 6th graders, noting positive feedback from Tulare County educators. The Springville area campused site is involved. A Friday activities schedule was approved for September 29.
