Half Million Spent on C V Highway Improvements
One-half million dollars is being spent by the state and county governments this year on improvement of the Central Valley Highway. The first Fall meeting of the Central Valley Highway Association will be held next Tuesday night at Bakersfield Inn. Two sections connecting Bakersfield with Selma are under construction via Shafter Wasco Corcoran and Hanford.

Daniel G. Smith Dies at 65 in Bakersfield
Funeral services were held for Daniel Garfield Smith, 65, at Janzen Funeral Home with Rev. Ackerson presiding. He died September 16 at Kern General Hospital, born December 23, 1882 in Alabama. Survived by four sons Homer F. Smith Shafter William Jerry Smith Santa Barbara Robert Dickie Daniel Smith Ray Calvin Smith Sacramento, one daughter Betty Ann Smith Shafter, and five grandchildren.

Local Bakery Building Gets Big Addition
The local bakery at 528 Central Avenue east of the tracks will add a 20 by 50 foot rear annex doubling current space. Leo Sullivan of Leo's Food Market owns the building and is expanding it. D. J. MacArthur will name the bakery Joe's Topper Bakery with a neon sign to arrive soon.
