Woman Suffers From Stray Bullet Near Buttonwillow
Mrs Mary Louise Walls was struck by a ricocheted .22 calibre bullet while seated near a pond during a frog hunt with husband W R Walls and two friends. Sewage bond urged to curb Shafter mosquitoes
Mosquito District Manager Art Geib told Shafter Chamber of Commerce that the present sewage plant layout makes mosquito control nearly impossible. He urged voters to approve the October 10 utility bond to enlarge the sewer system and clear surrounding growth to eliminate breeding sites. Richland School District trustees met with Ernest J. Kump Associates to approve designs for a three-pool Shafter facility. A 50 by 75 foot main pool, a 25 by 50 foot diving pool, and a 50 by 50 foot wading pool will be built with dressing rooms, showers, and spectator areas. Fire Started by Gasoline Burns Modie Cole
Modie Cole received first degree burns to his arms and face when gasoline used to clean a floor in his home at 420 South Shafter Ave ignited last Wednesday September 10. Fire crews controlled the blaze quickly saving the residence with only seared paint in the bedroom and bath valued at five dollars. The flames started when fumes from the gasoline met the water heater jets as Cole carried the bucket into the house. Insects kill six times as much merchantable timber in California annually as is destroyed by fire.
