The annual Cotton Field Day Tour will be Thursday September 12 from 9 a.m. to lunch, starting at the USDA Cotton Research Station on Shafter Avenue. Ag engineer Bill DeTar says two wagons will transport visitors to 11 stops where scientists explain ongoing work. call 746-6391 for more information.
MAPA will host its 16th of September dance at Shafter Veterans Hall on Saturday. Southwest and Los Burgenos will perform a mix of music including Nortena Tex Mex. Pre tickets are 5 dollars per person and 7 dollars at the door.

Wasco High School student Offord Rollins pleads not guilty in Bakersfield Municipal Court over the murder of 17 year old Maria Madera Rodriguez whose body was found by a canal near Lost Hills. The case raises juvenile versus adult court questions with a fitness hearing planned and a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 19.
Minter Field Airport District directors voted to table a $155,000 plan to build 11 hangars south of the transient parking area. Manager Kirk Nelson said profitability would take six years, with immediate demand from Los Angeles area owners and a current hangar waitlist of five plus two per week inquiries.
Shafter City Council discussed rapid growth and the need for new City Hall and Police Department facilities. City Manager Wade Mc Kinney outlined space, roof, and modernization issues at the 1974 Police Station and 1954 City Hall, noting doubling budgets and about 70 new employees. Four major options were noted including remodeling, expanding old buildings, or building new with short term and long term advantages and drawbacks.
Hipolito Scots 25 of Shafter was arrested around 6:30 p.m. on an attempted robbery charge after allegedly trying to rob a man at gunpoint in an alley and then entering the S and J Quickstop market with a handgun hidden in a trash can. Police recovered the weapon and ammunition.
