The Kern County Fair kicks off a nine day run with a Friday grandstand program featuring heritage groups and a George Hunt Associates production. A highlight is the Junior Livestock Show sale on Sept e, the nation’s premier 4-H FFA Junior Farmer event, raising funds for youth education.
The Shafter region saw fair conditions with highs in the 80s and a brief spike into the 90s on Monday. Daily temperature extremes from the USDA Cotton Research Station near Shafter are listed for the past week.
Assistant Police Chief Nixon was named Interim Chief after the Shafter City Council approved a leave of absence for Police Chief Hanley Witcher until January 1, 1975. Nixon will have full authority over the Police Department while Witcher remains a special consultant to the council. Witcher’s insurance and retirement benefits continue to be paid by the city.
Shafter officials will interview four of five candidates for city administrator. Colvard said all four are qualified, with one potentially unsuitable. Applicants hail from California and Arizona, some speak Spanish. The city will pay interview travel expenses and show the town to candidates as interviews are slated this week or next. Salary discussed between 16000 and 18000 dollars, not final.
Attorneys for developer Mar vin Roe filed an answer in Kern County Superior Court denying the city’s allegations and claiming Shafter violated California Government Code Section 65008. The filing seeks costs and further relief as deemed necessary. The action is dated September 4.
A Shafter man pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon after a shooting in the Chacon residence dispute. He faces up to one year in jail, was released on his own recognizance, and sentencing is set for October 17.
Richland trustees voted Monday night to hire a non disciplinary counselor for intermediate and junior high schools. The board directed Superintendent Evron Barber to seek qualified applicants as enrollment shows a 70 student drop from 1,824 to 1,754.
