May Festival Dates Set for Shafter Event Next Year
May 9 10 and 11 were set as the dates for the Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival with general chairman Ben Grundy announcing planning has begun. The Festival Board includes Gloria Boggs Clara Schnidt Marilyn Gladden Jack Nikkel and Herb Howell. Booth rentals rose from 10 to 20 with 20 percent of gross income charged to participating groups to reach a 2000 budget. Ideas discussed include a pancake breakfast a morning parade a dog show or talent show in Stringham Park and an evening junior rodeo. A possible air show was also raised. The next committee meeting is at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Thursday September 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Drunk Drivers Plead Guilty In Shafter Court
Justice Court Judge Har vey Gaede handled multiple pleas this week. Fred Edward Holloway of Bakersfield admitted to DUI and driving with a suspended license, ordered to attend four DUI classes, fined 250 dollars, and jailed three days. W. B. Lewis of Shafter pleaded guilty to DUI and related offenses, received 179 days of a 180 day sentence with rehab recommended. Joy Tony Ott of Shafter pleaded guilty to DUI and license suspensions, fined 440 dollars and jailed five days after two prior DUI charges. Joe Rodriguez Jr. pleaded guilty to petty theft, placed on probation, and ordered to pay 60 dollars restitution.
