At its September 8 meeting the Richland School Board discussed growing enrollment and housing needs. They urged a district wide study to assess future requirements and plan with community input, but took no action that day.
Last minute arrangements set starts for the sixth annual Inter-Service Club Golf Tournament and dinner. Ex change Club chair Tom Tucker announced the event with Dr. John H. Revell as master of ceremonies and Bob Somers urging punctual arrivals for a 10:00 start with a minute by minute tee time schedule.
The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District approved a $212,122 budget as Assessed land values rose to $5,272,140 in 1958 from $4,118,320 in 1957. A 60 cent per acre tax rate increase to $1.49 per $100 was approved to cover costs while the district kept a $2.00 per $100 rate in a prior year.
Plans announced for the nine hole Kern County course on Lords Road between Hiway 99 and the Porterville highway. The North Kern Golf Association met at Cawelo and set opening for Sunday October 12 with Paul Wise of Wasco as president and a 14 member board including Robrt Somers Shafter as vice president and Phil Clarkin Shafter as secretary. Double tees will allow front nine from front tees and back tees for the back.
Buster Long announces Shafter Merchants will again host a Big Tree downtown for the holiday season. He calls on merchants to assist with tree setup and decorations at Topper's, while a search for Santa Claus continues through September.
Cotton growers will assemble tomorrow at 9 a.m. for the annual Field Day at the U S Cotton Field Station near Shafter. Project leaders at the Experiment Station will discuss their work and advances in cotton research aimed at production and preservation of high quality fiber.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Armstrong Flickinger Mortuary in Bakersfield for Roy B. Ockey 65 of 285 E Lerdo Ave who died September 11 in a Bakersfield hospital Interment was in Shafter Cemetery officiated by Mr Dick Bassett of the Latter Day Saints Church Ockey had moved to Shafter recently
Season tickets for four home football games go on sale Thursday September 18 through the school business office on a first come first served basis. Reserved seats from the 50 to the 35 yard line on the west side hold until halftime. A block purchase option for groups is available at four dollars per season. Tickets are not sold through community service clubs.
Shafter High School Future Farmers of America will show livestock in the junior division of the stock show opening September 22 and closing September a. Beef cattle entries include Johnny Epp Al Fontes David Paslay Joe Romanini Roger Steelman Jim Ryan and Dennis Townsend. Swine and sheep entries listed. Shafter High School Agriculture Department will show 100 animals including senior beef cattle carloads and pens of shorthorns. Judging dates listed for junior and senior divisions with times and locations.

The Shafter High School Band under Larry Weiss will present a 45 minute concert at Kern County Fairgrounds on Saturday September 27 at 6 00 p m. The 67 member ensemble marks its first public performance of the season and has just completed its largest enrollment with all vacancies filled.
McMahan's Furniture marks its 39th anniversary, tracing roots to 1919 Bakersfield founded by James I. and John L. McMahan. The California chain now exceeds 100 stores and remains independently owned by the McMahan family. Local store manager Guy W. Rodgers operates the Shafter shop at 161 Central Ave.
The Shafter Model Airplane Club held its first air meet at the high school athletic field. Prize winners in beginners were Ben Laverty Jr Bobby Bongberg and Ted Ruggenberg. Advanced winners were Robbie Gates Jim Woodard and Allen Jones.
